  • Inherited from parents due to mother or father being diagnosed with the disease.
  • Mutations in the DNA of cells that create hemoglobin. One mutated gene you’ll have light to no signs of thalassemia symptoms. Two mutated genes the symptoms will be mild and not so affective. Three you will have moderate to severe signs and symptoms. Four mutated genes are extremely severe and can even kill the unborn baby if a mother is pregnant while being affected by thalassemia. If lucky the newborn baby can receive lifelong blood transfusion therapy.

  • The word thalassemia is actually a Greek word. The phrase “thalassa” means sea and the phrase “emia” means blood.
  • There are two types of thalassemia alpha and beta. Alpha occurs when gene or genes linked to the alpha globlin protein is missing or changed. Beta occurs when a similar problem affects how the beta globlin protein is produced in the body.
