What I really want to know about teaching Social Studies is how to make the best connections. It helps them to make decisions about issues that affects them, especially when they are older.  I also know that different topics that are covered include the United States government and geography. 

What I want to know about teaching Social Studies are how do teachers choose which cultures to cover when the history of the world is so broad. Do they focus more on United States history before branching out?

Factors such as geography, location, time period, and culture all play a role in how students understand and build context about the content that is presented to them. It is so important for students to understand their past in order to understand their present and the future. I also understand that as an elementary school social studies teacher, you are building the foundations needed for students to successfully continue on through their history studies in high school and college, and even after their school careers. 

Personally, I want to learn how to become the most engaging social studies teacher that I can. My mom is a high school history teacher and she always finds such unique ways to engage her students and make connections between what the students are learning and through things that they enjoy like projects, movies, and music. For example, for her US History classes, she does one project where she will play the song "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel, and the students are instructed to pick one historical topic that is listed in the song to research and present on. This is just a small example of ways that she makes class more interesting for her students. I also want to learn how to best incorporate my students different backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs into my social studies instruction in a way that makes everyone feel welcome, accepted, heard and equal so that optimal learning can take place. ]]> 2022-07-12 17:43:53 UTC https://padlet.com/darrenguido/ywqyulytk5vpob6a/wish/2242005901
