On September 11th, 2001, al-Qaeda terrorists seized commercial airplanes and flew into the World Trade Center's Twin Towers, killing nearly three thousand people. More than four hundred emergency responders died that day. This event later caused the U.S. declaration of War on Terror. 9/11 is important to American History because it is the worst homeland attack documented. It caused for an increase in security policies all around the country and a sense of unity against terrorism. The attacks also pushed racism and islamophobia.

Sources:

https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2021/09/02/two-decades-later-the-enduring-legacy-of-9-11/

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/9/11/decades-after-9-11-muslims-battle-islamophobia-in

The Dred Scott Decision of 1857 was a landmark Supreme Court case in which an enslaved man, Dred Scott, sued for his freedom on the grounds that he had lived in free territories. The Court ruled against Scott, stating that African Americans were not citizens and had no right to sue in federal court, and that Congress lacked the authority to prohibit slavery in the territories. This decision increased sectional tensions between the North and South, contributing to the events leading up to the Civil War. The Dred Scott Decision is significant for highlighting the deep legal and moral divisions over in the United States.

Sources:

https://www.britannica.com/event/Dred-Scott-decision

Also known as Black Tuesday, the Stock Market crash of 1929 occurred after sixteen million shares were made on the New York Stock exchange. Not only did this wipe out many investors, but it also marked the beginning of the Great Depression. The crash drastically reduced consumer wealth, triggered bank failures, and caused widespread unemployment and poverty. These dates are important in U.S. history as they highlight the vulnerabilities of the American financial system and the need for regulatory reforms.

Sources:

https://www.history.com/topics/great-depression/1929-stock-market-crash

The Bill of Rights comprises the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution, including individual liberties such as freedom of speech, religion, and the press. This ratification marked a crucial compromise between Federalists and Anti-Federalists, ensuring the protection of civil liberties. This is significant because it reflects the early struggles of the United States to balance power between the federal government and individual rights, shaping the nation's democratic foundations. The Bill of Rights represents a foundational moment in the establishment of American civil liberties and constitutional law.

Sources:

https://www.archives.gov/founding-docs/bill-of-rights/what-does-it-say

Battle of New Orleans 1815

The Battle of New Orleans, was the final major battle of the War of 1812, where American forces under General Andrew Jackson decisively defeated a British invasion force. They achieved a decisive victory against the British, despite being heavily outnumbered. This victory boosted American nationalism and made Jackson a national hero, pushing him toward the presidency. These dates are important in U.S. history as they mark the emergence of the United States as a capable nation on the international stage, creating a sense of unity and identity. Unlike more obvious historical markers such as the Declaration of Independence or the Civil War, the significance of the Battle of New Orleans lies in its unexpected triumph. It proved that the victory during the American Revolution was not a one hit wonder and that the United States was in fact powerful.

Sources:

https://www.britannica.com/event/Battle-of-New-Orleans-United-States-United-Kingdom-1815
