GDS : AN IDEAL APPLICATION OF ANIMATION IN GAMING

GAME DESIGN AND SIMULATION

The Game and Design Simulation(GDS) testbed environment is aimed at facilitating game design, evaluation and reuse of game functionality over a wide range of platforms from dedicated ones like game consoles to low range general personal computer systems. It would efficiently handle the multiplayer games using distributed network capabilities.

GDS is done in multiple stages. In the game design stage, the focus is on the way the game ‘feels’ which is followed by the graphics design stage where the structure of the game world and its characters is modelled. Game evaluation is done by gathering experimental info.

To potentially facilitate load distribution in a network, we design our GDS as a set of separate concurrently executable tasks. The GDS environment facilitates and enhances the entire game design and development process. It results in more rigorous planning implementation with guaranteed level of performance.

-f2015071

1. What is GDS?

GDS stands for game design and simulation. It is a testbed environment for supporting 3D game design, prototyping and evaluation.

2. What are the stages in GDS?
GDS involves game design followed by graphical designing. Then game world and character modelling is done. Finally, the game is evaluated and improvised based on the experimental information collected.

3. Why is game designing done before graphics designing?
Graphics designers are much more concerned with the models of the game world and the game characters rather than with the way the game feels when played.

4. What is VE ? What does it refer to?
Virtual environment (VE) is often used to denote the specific software architecture and the underlying data models used in virtual reality applications. In the computer game simulations, VE refers to the game world and character models, and the game simulation software architecture.

5. Were there any experiments to test GDS?
Yes, experiments with physically based flight simulations have been carried out in the scope of the VirtuaFly project.

6. What was the objective of the experiment?

The project VirtuaFly2 has been launched with the objective to develop a commercial amusement product based on the experience from VirtuaFly.

7. How did VirtuaFly2 work?

VirtuaFly2 is a multiplayer virtual reality game based on simulated physical motions of the player's body. Player movements are detected by motion tracking interface subsystem and mapped to its avatar in the virtual game world. Then the player could control the flight of their avatar by natural body movements.

8. Were the results of these experiments released to the public?
Yes, VirtuaFly2 was played in front of a large screen so that the public could observe both the players and their representations in the virtual game world.

GPU's are the main components responsible for converting data into graphics and then to a video output. They are very essential due to the fact that quality of diplay of a game and its framing rates are determined by how powerful these systems are. They have certain parameters such as clock speed and memory bandwith, these gives us a count regarding how efficient and powerful they are.Certain games need a higher memory bandwith and clockspeeds because of obvious reasons such as it needs more data conversion to output video so as to avoid a phenomena called framing.Talking about processors they have same function as GPU,but they are used for a more general purpose such as providing enough graphics for general applications

-Sidhanth Krishna

1.What is a GPU?

GPU stands for graphic processing unit. Its uses are mentioned as above and are helping tools for a processor.

2.Why is GPU needed if processor is already doing its work?

The processor or more commonly known as the Central Processing Unit is considered the brain of the computer. It computes every kind of input data that is provided and gives out a corresponding output.GPU are as mentioned very powerful tools used to develop and enhance these brains and is thus called its soul.Insight64 principal analyst Nathan Brookwood described the unique capabilities of the GPU this way: “GPUs are optimized for taking huge batches of data and performing the same operation over and over very quickly, unlike PC microprocessors, which tend to skip all over the place.”

3.Why is GPU more superior in performance when compared to a CPU?

Architecturally, the CPU is composed of a only few cores with lots of cache memory that can handle a few software threads at a time. In contrast, a GPU is composed of hundreds of cores that can handle thousands of threads simultaneously. The ability of a GPU with 100+ cores to process thousands of threads can accelerate some software by 100x over a CPU alone. What’s more, the GPU achieves this acceleration while being more power- and cost-efficient than a CPU.

4.If GPU is more superior then why cant we use a GPU instead of a CPU?

GPU is something that can be used to enhance CPU's performance.Let me compare it with another system which consists of a converging lens and sunlight. The converging lens helps focussing the sunlight at a certain point called focus which enhances the heat transferred to that point, but if there is no sunlight then there is no use of converging lens and thus CPU is an essential component and GPU are auxiliary components.

5.What is meant by RAM?

RAM (random access memory) is the place in a computer where the operating system, application programs, and data in current use are kept so that they can be quickly reached by the computer's processor. RAM is much faster to read from and write to than the other kinds of storage in a computer, the hard disk, floppy disk, and CD-ROM. However, the data in RAM stays there only as long as your computer is running. When you turn the computer off, RAM loses its data. When you turn your computer on again, your operating system and other files are once again loaded into RAM, usually from your hard disk.

6.Why is display and audio important?

It is true that GPU and CPU are components that convert data to video but for this video to be played under certain resolution,a corresponding display of the same resolution is a must, only then can we know how efficient and powerful is the performance of the GPU accelerated processor.Nowadays display of upto 5000 pixels is being made and can give a feel of 3D experiance.

7.What is framing?

If a GPU accelerated CPU is not that efficient to provide a resolution of very high value ie if the amount of data that is being converted to the output is not sufficient to match a certain resolution then as a direct consequence certain frames are observed

which means that the video gets "stuck" at a constant rate. This phenomena is called framing.

-Sidhanth Krishna

1. What is esports?

Esports (also known as eSports, e-sports, competitive gaming, electronic sports, or progaming in Korea) is a term for organized multiplayer video game competitions, particularly between professional players. The most common video game genres associated with electronic sports are real time strategy, fighting, first-person shooter, and multiplayer online battle arena. Tournaments such as The International Dota 2 Championship, the League of Legends World Championship, the Battle.net World Championship Series, the Evolution Championship Series, the Intel Masters, provide both live broadcasts of the competition, and cash prizes to competitors.

2. How are the tournaments held and what is the estimated income of a professional gamer?

Esports tournaments are almost always physical events in which occur in front of a live audience. The tournament may be part of a larger gathering, or the competition may be the entirety of the event. Competitions take several formats, but the most common are single or double elimination, sometimes hybridized with group stage. Competitions usually have referees or officials to monitor for cheating

For well established games, total prize money can amount to millions of dollars a year.Often, game developers provide prize money for tournament competition directly, but sponsorship may also come from third parties, typically companies selling computer hardware, energy drinks, or computer software.

3.What are the major associations and teams associated with the gaming sector?

Professional gamers, or "pro gamers", are often associated with gaming teams and/or broader gaming associations. Teams include Evil Geniuses, Fnatic,Titan and Natus Vincere. In addition to prize money from tournament wins, players may also be paid a separate team salary. Team sponsorship may cover tournament travel expenses or gaming hardware. Prominent eSports sponsors include companies such as Razer. Associations include the Korean e-Sports Association, the International eSport Federation (IeSF) and the United Kingdom eSports Association, a member of IeSF.

-f2015071

Game design and simulation test bed environment (GDS) is the technology of the day. Today, 3D animation and simulation games not only provide a quality entertainment. They play an important role in education, medicine, military, art and creation, business world and so on. They had made science easier and interesting, created an awareness on survival needs and shown light on medieval history. Simulation models can help us explore the behaviour of any system under specified situations. It can be used to explore changes and alternatives in a low risk environment.

1.In Military :

GDS could be used in the training of civilian and military personnel. When it is prohibitively expensive or simply too dangerous to allow trainees to use the real equipment in the real world, it could be done in a "safe" virtual environment yet giving a lifelike experience. And still providing the convenience to permit mistakes during training for a safety-critical system.

2.In Computer Science :

An interesting application of computer simulation is to simulate computers using computers. In computer architecture, a type of simulator, typically called an emulator, is often used to execute a program that has to run on some inconvenient type of computer (for example, a newly designed computer that has not yet been built or an obsolete computer that is no longer available), or in a tightly controlled testing environment For example, simulators have been used to debug a microprogram or sometimes commercial application programs, before the program is downloaded to the target machine. Since the operation of the computer is simulated, all of the information about the computer's operation is directly available to the programmer, and the speed and execution of the simulation can be varied at will.

3.In Social Education :

Social simulations may be used in social science classrooms to illustrate social and political processes in anthropology, economics, history, political science, or sociology courses, typically at the high school or university level. These may, for example, take the form of civics simulations, in which participants assume roles in a simulated society, or international relations simulations in which participants engage in negotiations, alliance formation, trade, diplomacy, and the use of force. Such simulations might be based on fictitious political systems, or be based on current or historical events. In recent years, there has been increasing use of social simulations for staff training in aid and development agencies. Ex. The Carana simulation.
