What I knew about architecture was simply the way buildings were designed in relation to its functionality. I thought that in the past, architecture was used for aesthetic purposes only. In this age, I thought that architecture was used to construct buildings that could only be utilized and not for beauty.

Architecture is a fine art when its purpose is to create a kind of beauty in relation to its functionality. It can be practical and also beautiful at the same time. There is so much more to the architecture than form or functionality. It can be beautiful and can give a whole new meaning or feeling when being observed or studied.

UGOLINO AND HIS SONS

by: Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux

In Dante’s Inferno, Ugolino was a man who was condemned to hell because he committed the sin of cannibalism. He was thrown in jail with his three children and eventually starved to death. Once Ugolino realized this, his demeanor changed. He was not the father that his children needed — he became stone. He ignored the cries of his children until all of them died of starvation. Only then he realized what he had done and only then did he grieve. He was condemned because of the act he had done afterwards. This sculpture captures this moment beautifully and even painfully. The movement of Ugolino’s children appear as if they are clinging or grabbing on to their father — desperate for his attention. The way Ugolino is sitting down, his facial expression while biting his finger show that he is fixated on something else. I consider this sculpture to be fine art because of how truthful the sculpture depicts that scene. You could almost feel the pain of the children being ignored by their father during a time where they needed him the most.

source:
Metmuseum.org. (2019).
