When the chemical was soaked up in the stick we put held the popsicle stick on the top of the flame and watched to see what color the flame would change.

Why does this phenomenon happen?

The flame changes color because some atoms have electrons that move from one spot

to another. When this occurs light is either absorbed or emitted. Metals are the element

that can change the flame color. It is a wavelength rather than a mixture found in white light.

How did you do it?

Well we started soaking the popsicle stick in the chemical

so that when we placed the stick on top of the flame there

would be a color change within the flame.

What happened in your experiment?

When we put the soaked popsicle stick over the flame the flame

changed a different color. Every chemical changed the flame a

different type of color.

How did you determine your unknown chemical?

We determined our unknown chemical by using other properties

of the other chemical properties. The flame of the unknown chemical

was very similar to strontium. It turned a pinkish red color and we

immediately knew that it was strontium.
