Some are concerned that students are given too much choice. Perhaps they won't pay attention or do their work if they are allowed to roam around and sit where they want. Also, it is harder for the teacher to keep an eye on them in flexible seating than if they were all sitting in one place. They may even be tempted to talk to their friends about non academic subjects. flexible seating may also cause arguments and disagreements among students.

If I were a 1-3 grade teacher, I would offer my students several choices for flexible seating. I would use furniture such as couches, bean bags, and special chairs. However, I would only use flexible seating at certain times of the day or for certain activities. Example: During read aloud, I would allow a certain number of students to pick a special spot to sit for the duration of the reading. The next day, I would pick a new set of students.
