Most of the teachers were very strict. There was one way to do things and not a lot of opportunity for creative thinking. My school was not very culturally diverse. Since it was a private school, the majority of the students were white. There were a handful of students that were not(including Walter Payton's kids). I felt completely safe at Tarkington as a student. No one bothered me on a regular basis.

Actually my 5th grade teacher was the one who really opened my eyes to becoming a teacher. We were able to build a unique connection that lasted throughout the elementary years.
