Does Neuroscience Threaten Free Will?

Scientists knowledge of the brain has grown over the years, but the concept of free will has become more confusing and complex. Neuroscientists all have different opinions of free will and many say that there is no such thing as free will. The ability to choose is just an illusion or a trick the mind is playing on us, they say. We beleive we are free to make our own decisions, but the choice is really already made before we know it. The problem is, many neuroscientists do not have very much knowledge about the concept of free will. We are capable of making decisions and being aware of what is going on thanks to our brain. Things outside of our decision can also affect the choice we are about to make. For example, if you want to go to the dance, but know you’ll be too tired to go to softball the next morning, you may decide to not go. A famous experiment tested by Benjamin Libet measured someone’s brain activity, while they pressed a button during random times. They were then asked when they became aware of when their intention to press the button became about. They found that 200 milliseconds before the person became aware of their intention to press the button, that their brain had already began telling their fingers to move. This proved that consciousness doesnt play a role in our decisions and our brain does it for us.

Jesus Christ was brought into the world as a human so God could show us how to live our life through the human form and to have the freedom of proof. Jesus came to free us from sin through his crucifiction. Hebrews 2:14-15 tells us Jesus “Shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death-that is, the devil-and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death” Jesus freed us, however this does not give us the freedom to continue to hurt others the way that others hurt Jesus. Through God, we have be freed from temptations and learn to live our lives as true disciples. A Christian is geared away from superstion, errrior, bondage, deception, guilt, depravity, ignorance, and a destructive life. The Lord shed his blood to give us freedom and the hope to eternal life.

https://www.ucg.org/the-good-news/what-does-it-mean-to-have-freedom-in-christ

The freedom of imagination and expression is embedded deeply into our amendments. The first amendment plays a strong role in what our privileges are in art. We are granted the freedom to express ourselves and are allowed to have an opinion or point of view about certain topics. There are different forms of art, different ways to view art, and it can deeply represent who we are as a person. Art and literature allow individuals to show our emotions, express our opinions, and our minds. Art gives us the freedom to say what we want thorugh a sculpture, drawing, painitng, etc.

https://www.aclu.org/other/freedom-expression-arts-and-entertainment

Water covers about 70% of the Earth, however only about 3% is fresh water. Two - thirds of this water is trapped in frozen glaciers, which leaves only 1% that is accessible to people to drink. As a result to this, about 1.1 billion individuals do not have access to water worldwide and 2.7 billion do not have water available to them for a month or longer. Millions of people are exposed to diseases due to unsanitated water and over 2 million people (mostly children) die from bacterial diseases each year. Some diseases include cholera, typhoid fever, and diarrheal diseases.

Water systems around the world that help out the ecosystem and give the population access to water are very stressed. Rivers, lakes, and other water suppliers are becoming polluted and emilinated. Over the years, half of the worlds wetlands have disappeared. Agriculture uses water more than any other sources and wastes most of it after use. Climate change often causes alternating patterns and weather, leading to shortages, droughts, and floods all around the world. Scientists studies show that 2/3 of the human population may face water shortages.

There are different causes to water shortages all around the world. The water crisis is a major problem becasue not only does it cause shortages around the world, but depending on where you live, you may be aware of the algy bloom that is killing many ecosystems and organisms. What happens is, the algy feeds off of nutrients and as it keeps growing and growing, it blocks the sun, causing the coral and fish to die. The algy receives nutrients from our septic tanks which are emptied into the oceans, as well as our agricultural systems, leaking fertilizer, which also empties the left over water into rivers, streams, and the ocean.

https://www.worldwildlife.org/threats/water-scarcity

How has engineering granted us freedom in certain aspects

Engineering has brought us freedom in so many ways. Over the years, indivualds have come up with ideas and created them to make others’ dreams possible. Engineerers play a significant role in giving us visibility to human rights. Engineers also make projects that are fun, but still find a plan to make sure it is safe. Engineers can also collect health data to total populations in certain areas that suffer maternal mortality at a very high rate. Programming can help to track down these locations and give us the freedom to find ways to help find a solution to the problem. Many things that engineers have come up with in the past can make our lives much easier when we are faced with real world problems. Having the freedom to medical devices, portable water, food, transportation, and electricity are all examples of things we have today becasue of engineers. Without these, our lives would not be the same.

http://memagazineselect.asmedigitalcollection.asme.org/article.aspx?articleid=2680730

We created the Bill of Rights to make sure everyone has equal rights and abilities to express whatever they want. To limit the freedom of speech limits the freedom of expression, religion, and assembly, forcing people to keep their views and thoughts on the inside. Individuals therefor have the freedom to express themselves on social media and other online sites. Many people are getting bullied becasue some individuals are taking this too far.

If we add even more limitations on the freedom of speech, our upcoming society will never grow up to be able to handle real life situations on their own in adulthood. An individual should not get offended by what others say to them, because in the long run, it really doesn’t matter. If someone says, “You’re stupid,” we should have the common sense to let it go and not care. Sure, the statement said may hurt someone on the inside, but it isn’t the other person’s fault that they can't handle themselves. If kids opinions are kept in a bottle when growing up and facing real life situations they may not be able to handle the word “no”. For example, if you are denied from a job, if limitations are made denial is going to fall under the category of bullying which is obscured and dramatic. Upcoming adults won’t be able to speak out for what is right because humanity will be afraid to speak out because they fear that the law will stop them from doing so.

Going to a Catholic school gives others the privilege to worship God and have the opportunity to learn about and practice our faith. Catholic schools allow us to pray, sing songs, learn about God, and go to mass. At a public school, you will often get in trouble for practicing your faith in public. You are not allowed to pray or mention Jesus while attending a public school.

Engineering and creating new projects can sometimes threaten our human rights. For example, we have built drones and acoustical devices specifically for the military and could be dangerous. Human rights practitioners will usually look at the “precautionary principle”, which states that without the purpose of science, engineers should try to avoid selling these systems to the public becasue they can have a negative affect on our environment. Article 15 of Human Rights states the right to prosper from scientific advances, but requires science to be controlled by government and also encourages international cooperation.

Night is narrated by a Jewish teenager who lives in the town of Sighet, in Hungarian Transylvania. Night tells the story of the Holocaust through a 15 year old boy and turns the young into a mature, young adult that witnesses the death of his family. Elizer studies the 5 books of the Old Testament in the Bible and the Jewish doctrine of mysticism. Moises the Beadle, his teacher, was deported out of the country and later tells back warning everyone that the Gestapo (German secret police) took over his train, led everyone into the woods, and killed them all. Nobody took Moishe seriously and thinks he has gone crazy. A few weeks later, the Jews of Sighet are gathered and forced to live in small ghettos. They are later herded onto cattle cars and are nearly starved to death. They later arrive to Auschwitz, the largest concentration camp around during the Holocaust. For the next year, Wiesel loses his home, family, and friends, and continues on his terrible journey at Auschwitz. He and his father are spepareted from his mother and sisters and never seen them again. Wiesel and his father see many things while in the camp and help eachother to survive until his father dies from physical abuse.

Night was published 10 years later after being released from the camp and he used it as his therapy to get everything out. This book is a single experience and not a huge broad spectrum that everyone usual talks about.

Auschwitz opened in 1940, and was the largest concentration camp during the Holocaust. It caused the most Jewish deaths, which was led by Josef Mengele during WWII, leading to more than 1 million deaths. It was located in Poland and Nazi enemies were eliminated using gas chambers, were often burned, and were used as slaves. In January,1954, stressed by the approaching Soviet army, the Nazis ordered the camp to be emptied of prisoners and did this by implementing a forced march of about 60,000 people to new locations.

“A Raisin in the Sun” is a play about a struggling, black family in Chicago and was performed on Broadway. It became the first play written by an African American and reflected the lives of the hard- working black society and those who went to school with Hansberry in Chicago. The author chose to use her family members because they truly were an inspiration to her and her writing. She claims that she would never have been able to do anything without them. In just two years, the play was translated into 35 languages and was performed all over the world.

During the 50s and 60s African Americans were treated poorly and were prohibited from doing things. These were called the Jim Crow Laws. Back then, restaurants could not serve blacks and whites in the same dining room, movie theatres had to have different entrances, restrooms, and seating areas, and pools, waiting rooms, businesses, bathrooms, and water fountains had “ white only” signs placed on them.

The word “Holocaust” derived from the Greek word “holo” or whole and “kaustos” or burned, describes the sacrificial offering burned on the altar. Since WWI and WWII, the word has developed a new meaning. The Holocaust was a mass murder of about 6 million Jews and other people that Adolf Hitler beleived were inferior to him. He believed that Jews were a racial threat to the German purity and persecuted them in concentration camps in Poland. Hitler also beleived that blonde hair and blue eyes were pure and if you did not have them, you would be murdered too. He captured the blonde hair, blue eyed individuals and kept them for himself so that he could make them the mass population.

Jean Flahive has lived in Maine for her whole life, which has had a very big impact on her and her writing. The northeast coast has brought uncountable memories and has inspired her in so many ways. Many of her books reflect the hikes on Appalachian Trail, Lighthouses like the striped candy, and all of the amazing animals she encountered in Baxter State Park. Her mother was also a writer and loved to reword her high school essays. They used to argue over and over about sentence structure and word choice. Her mother died very young, but left an impact on Flahive and her passion for writing.
