In this week’s chapter Ratliff discussed the idea of closeness. On the first page of this chapter he says that closeness is, “two or more musicians or musical elements, acting in the purest coordination tends to escape us because we can’t see it. In singing and in playing, it gives the listener a secure, jacked feeling. Closeness is developed over time, and its value to the ear is absolute.” I think Ratliff is saying that the different tones and voices add to the overall effect of the song. So yes, I do agree with Ratliff’s argument on this musical element. I think that the varied differences in music magnifies the overall impact of a song.

Those who write about music are generally concerned with contrasts, because contrasts seem to be anecdotally measurable. This is big, that is small. This is rough, that is smooth. We translate sounds into visuals, and we apply our own rulers and meters.
-Ben Ratliff
