- “He wished he could’ve explained some of this. How he had been braver than he ever thought possible, but how he had not been so brave as he wanted to be. The distinction was important.”
- “But I do like churches. The way it feels inside. It feels good when you just sit there, like you’re in a forest and everything’s really quiet, expect there’s still this sound you can’t hear.”
- The theme of the massive emotional burden that comes from war is especially present within these chapters.
- Another theme throughout this section is an overwhelming sense of guilt even when it is not warranted.
- All of these chapters have the characters carrying an increasingly heavy burden with increasingly grim events.

And it’s not a movie and you aren’t a hero and all you can do is whimper and wait. ”
- But in a story, which is a kind of dreaming, the dead sometimes smile and sit up and return to the world.”
- These last chapters wrap up the fundamental themes of the book perfectly.
- The end of the book has a noticeably more optimistic tone then most of the book.
- We’re absolutely satisfied with the ending of this book.

-On top of the material things they carried, weapons and supplies. They were carrying emotional baggage from regret and loss. Those are the things they were carrying.
- The first chapter introduces all of the characters.
- The first chapter introduces the theme of the “carrying” of things.
- A very major theme is the humanity of these soldiers, just like anyone else.
- Another common theme showed as something the men are carrying is regret and guilt.
