Which is more valuable, time or money? Most of us would probably say 'time'. So why do we waste hours watching boring TV programmes, or kill time playing games on our phones and tablets?
We think it's impossible to make more time. But, like money, we can choose to spend our time wisely or we can fritter it away.

Until we actually get ill, most of us take our health for granted. We say we're too busy to go to the gym, or to cook a healthy meal, or to get enough sleep.

But, just to take an example, one in three adults today will have developed diabetes by the time they're sixty. Don't be one of them. Invest time in your health.

According to Stephen Covey, in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, we tend to spend most of our time either dealing with things that must be done immediately or doing things that don't really need to be done at all (like watching TV). Instead, we should be thinking about what we will be doing in five years' time, not just what we need to do by tomorrow.

These plans may not be urgent, but that doesn't mean that they aren't important. If you are always dealing with the day to day emergencies, you'll never manage to achieve anything bigger.

Apparently, people who are always late are actually people who are more optimistic and hopeful about life — they expect things to take less time than they actually will.

It's nice to be optimistic, but it's also quite stressful being late all the time, and you may also upset the people who have to wait for you.

So make a point of building in an extra 5-10 minutes 'buffer' time throughout the day. Your friends and colleagues will thank you for it.

Although it may take a little bit of effort, there are a lot of things you can do to make your life run more smoothly. For example, think how many hours you have spent in your life sorting out light and dark laundry — why not put them into

two separate bags in the first place?

And always try to get ready the things that you will need the night before.

Invest some time in getting better organized and by the end of the year you'll have saved hours of running around in a panic.

For one week, write down everything you spend time on and how long you spend doing it.

Then evaluate how you are spending your time. What things are you doing that you don't enjoy? If they aren't essential, do you really need to do them at all?

How and when do you waste the most time? How could you use that time differently?

Then take time to plan what you will be doing over the coming days and months, using the insights you gained from the 'time audit'.

It simply isn't possible to be super productive all the time — everyone needs a break.

Too often, super busy people don't switch off in the evenings or even on holiday, and this can be counterproductive. Lack of sleep can reduce productivity by as much as 80%, and if you push yourself too much you could end up having to take a lot of time off work to recover.
