This novel follows characters from the poor, rundown town of Vacca Vale, Indiana who all live in the same building known as the Rabbit Hutch. The main character, Blandine, shares her apartment with three teenage boys, all of whom have aged out of the state foster care system that has repeatedly failed them. Gunty provides a portrayal of the challenges faced by young adults who have aged out of the foster care system without finding a “forever” family. Through the shifting perspectives and different characters in the book, the author explores mental illness, trauma, loneliness, and the necessity of human connection.

The author, Tess Gunty, is from a small rundown town in Indiana, which inspired Vacca Vale in the book. Similar to the book, there were closings of large automobile factories in the town that held a lot of jobs. When the factories closed it caused many people to be jobless. The town struggled for decades to even partially recover from it. Many characters and aspects of the book come from inspiration from her childhood in Indiana.

This is a movie about a couple who decide to adopt three siblings. It portrays their journey through the foster care system and becoming a family. The movie also highlights the challenges of being in the foster care system and the emotional and psychological impact of living with neglectful parents and the trauma experienced by children in the foster care system.

This movie connects to Salman Rushdie’s belief that the power of storytelling is to challenge societal norms and provoke thought. The movie sheds light on a topic that is often overlooked or misunderstood by society - the experiences and struggles of children in foster care. Children placed in foster care often face considerable uncertainty in the permanence of their placements, which can have lasting impacts on their lives.

This book follows a 12-year-old girl who is put into foster care after a traumatic incident with her stepfather. Initially, in her foster family, she struggles with feeling betrayed by her mother and resists the family's affection. The book follows her journey as she learns to open up to love and support. The book explores similar themes to "The Rabbit Hutch" such as belonging and human connection. It also communicates the mental and emotional challenges faced by foster children.

This book connects to Salman Rushdie’s belief that storytelling can reveal truths that sometimes journalism and nonfiction can’t. This connects because it delves into the personal experiences and emotions of a young girl navigating through the complexities of foster care, offering a unique perspective that goes beyond mere factual reporting.

This is a memoir by Britteny Sherell that follows her journey from the foster care system to a successful life. The book provides a first-hand account of the challenges and triumphs experienced by those in foster care. She talks about how she developed anger and trust issues, PTSD, and even attempted to take her own life. By reading this book, the author can gain a deeper understanding of the foster care experience and the impact it has on individuals as they strive to build a better future for themselves. Salman Rushdie believes that a writer has the responsibility to tell the truth as they see it. And that is exactly what Sherell did in her memoir as she uses the power of truth-telling through her own experiences and journey.
