How can you use social media in the classroom?

In MEDA5400 you have read several articles about using social media in the classroom. We have all discussed the pros and cons of social media. Considering the pros and cons, can you think of a particular social media outlet you could see yourself using with your students?

I use Instagram to post important reminders about assignments, school news, school forms, etc. The account is set to private so I am able to share photos of students doing amazing things in the classroom and with their athletic teams and clubs. My eighth graders really like Instagram.

I am looking forward to hearing your suggestions.

With our Canvas platform, we have several outlets in the program that promote healthy, monitored social interaction. I also use the announcement outlet on Canvas to document important information for students and parents. Discussion board are also beneficial for students to see what modeled discussion looks like and what is appropriate. With this being said, students must be taught how to use this media even though it is private media for only their classmates/groups.

With Skype and Whatsapp, my students get the opportunity to interact with Spanish speaking students from Dallas. The first grade English learners read to my students in Spanish and my students read them in English. Each group is able to experience the importance of learning the languages (English and Spanish) to be able to communicate. This experience awaken the meaning of learning Spanish in a non Spanish speaking area. It also gives them the opportunity to practice concepts learned prior to the reading activity to know each other.
I believe Instagram is a great way to post reminders about assignments and more information. If students are absent for one or other reason, they are still updated with assignments and able to turn them on time.

Our school board is currently looking at how teachers and students should be utilizing social media under the umbrella of JC Schools. Concerns include student safety and free speech. Can a teacher rant about the mold in her classroom on facebook? Can a student post videos of a teacher lecturing? Is it appropriate for the school to discipline students for social media posts that may or may not have been posted during the school day?

A few years ago, a colleague of mine introduced me to Fakebook.com, which is similar to Facebook. However, on Fakebook, teachers and students may create fictional characters online and share stories through the eyes of the characters themselves, giving students a deeper understanding of characters and the foundations of what they are reading. For instance, one Fakebook post could be based upon a character from one of William Shakespeare's plays.
