Jock Brandis, the founder of the FBP, found that affordable peanut sheller would be of great service to a small village in Mali when he traveled there to fix a small village's water treatment system in 2001. In 2003 Brandis teamed up with a group of returned Peace Corps volunteers from Wilmington, North Carolina, to form the Full Belly Project, which invented the Universal Nut Sheller.
