We learn about some of Serafina's unique traits such as her loss of a toe on each foot, and her missing bones that allow her to cram and navigate small spaces. We then discover her odd hobby of catching rats. One night, she is out catching rats when she spots a mysterious man dressed in a black cloak chasing after a young child wearing a bright yellow dress, Serafina attempts an attack on the man, but the girl vanishes and the man turns toward Serafina and goes after her, Serafina manages to escape and survives the night.

Frustrated with her father, Serafina goes upstairs, where she is not allowed, and spots the Vanderbilts and their son Braeden and entertainer, Thorne. Serafina is seen by Braeden and she introduces herself begging him to not tell his family about their secret residence, A woman then bursts into the room claiming her daughter is missing, Serafina avoids detection and realizes the girl in the yellow dress is Clara, the woman's daughter. The Vanderbilts order a search, including the basement. Serafina warns her father and they cover up all evidence of them staying there and relocate. Serafina goes to the stables and meets Braeden but she is caught and makes an excuse to why she is there and who she is ending up in Braeden's carriage where they are attacked by the black cloak. He targets Braeden but mistakes him for one of the horsemen and takes him instead.

She visits Braeden's room that evening when The Black Cloak attempts his 2nd attack on Braeden, but they locked the door. So in place for Braeden, he takes another child and vanishes into the night. Serafina begins to grow suspicious of Thorne, but does not possess any real evidence. She discovers that Braeden will be going with Thorne the following day for his safety. Serafina knows she has to act fast, she lures Thorne to the lion cubs knowing that the mother will attack him, the plan works but the cloak fights Serafina by itself in a super long drawn out fight sequence, she eventually frees the souls held by the Cloak including her mother who was placed in the body of the lioness. But sadly, her mother prefers her cat form and goes back to her cubs.
