In the early 1950's the Iranian government, led by Mohammed Mossadegh, took control of the British-run oil industry in the country. The US wanted to counter Soviet influence over Iran. That backfired though, Iran resents U.S involvement and elects fundamentalist Muslim leaders. This all leads to a hostage crisis involving Americans being held captive for 444 days. A month after the hostage crisis took place, things kept getting more intense. Such as Gas prices rising, and President Carter freezing Iranian assets, in pressure to get the Iranian's to let the American hostages free. After a long 444 days, the Americans were let free and a new president was elected.

The US government aborted an attempt to support Guatemalans who aimed to overthrow President Jacobo Arbenz. The Communists now effectively control the political life of Guatemala. Washington used the CIA and US Ambassador John Peurifoy to support and direct certain Guatemalan military leaders in overthrowing Arbenz's government. They were trying to persuade Guatemala's citizens and political/military leaders that a major invasion force was steadily moving toward the nation's capital so unnerved Arbenz and others that the government fell without much of a battle.

In the late Cold War period however, the American overthrow of the Arbenz government came to be widely seen as shameful. This is mostly because the governments that followed the 1954 coup in the subsequent five decades were far more repressive than Arbenz's elective government.

This was started in the 1945 when Moscow took control of the Hungarian people. Stalin even had control over Hungary's leader (Rakosi) at the time . The nature of this control was horrific because all wealth that Hungarians obtained was immediately taken away. However, in 1956 the Hungarian people fought back.

Stalin's death in 1953 caused a change in leadership in Russia, and thus with a different set of policies, Rakosi was forced to resign. This wasn't the only reason Rakosi resigned, it was the unfortunate circumstances of bad climate and crops as well. However, student and workers took the streets in protest to Soviet control over Hungary (October 23 1956). This resulted in the Soviets brutally killing these people and 200,000 people fleeing. 8 days later, Hungary withdrew themselves from the WARSAW PACT. This shook the Soviets so they set up a rival government in Hungary. The Soviets sent tanks to restore order in Budapest and ended up killing even more civilians. Tanks even went as far as dragging bodies to warn people not to come near them. The US reacted very astonished and this increased the tensions between the US and the soviets. These series of events is known as one of the greatest tragedies, the Hungarian Uprising.

Source: Trueman. “The Hungarian Uprising of 1956.” History Learning Site, History Learning Site, 25 May 2015, www.historylearningsite.co.uk/modern-world-history-1918-to-1980/the-cold-war/the-hungarian-uprising-of-1956/.

The Soviet-Afghan war. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in late december in 1973 by troops from Soviet Union. THe Soviet Union were in favor and supporting the Afghan communist government. The power was therefore shared by two Marxist-Leninist political group. The new government hich had little popular support, forged close ties with the Soviet Union, launched ruthless purges of all domestic opposition, and began extensive land and social reforms that were bitterly resented by the devoutly Muslim and largely anti-communist population.

The Afghan War quickly settled down into a stalemate, with more than 100,000 Soviet troops controlling the cities, larger towns, and major garrisons and the mujahideen moving with relative freedom throughout the countryside. Soviet troops tried to crush the insurgency by various tactics, but the guerrillas generally eluded their attacks. The Soviets then attempted to eliminate the mujahideen’s civilian support by bombing and depopulating the rural areas. These tactics sparked a massive flight from the countryside; by 1982 some 2.8 million Afghans had sought asylum in Pakistan, and another 1.5 million had fled to Iran.

The Iranian government, which was led by Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh in the 1950’s, had taken control of the British-run oil industry in the country. Among U.S. leaders such as Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, this was evidence that communism was seeping into the Middle East. The US wanted to prevent that because they did not support communism. Following his election he began to nationalize Iran’s oil fields, greatly upsetting the British oil company, AngloPersian, which had extracted oil from Iran since the early twentieth century. This British company had paid the Iranians some taxes for the oil, but everyone knew it wasn’t enough. This led many Iran and Mossadegh people to become upset. In 1953, the CIA bribed Iranian military leaders to arrest and charge Mossadegh with treason. In his place they put an anti communist dictator, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who became the king of Iran. This new king made sure that America and Great Britain got a good supply of oil, and they would provide money for them to make sure the king had resources.
US wanted to help Iran not go towards the Soviet union because they were having an influence over them. This leads to a hostage crisis involving Americans being held captive for 444 days. This is connected to a cold war because people weren't going into actual war but they were getting angry over oil. On the day of Ronald Reagan's inauguration as U.S. president in January 1981, the Iranians released the American hostages in return for them not freezing the billions of dollars in Iranian assets.

In Afghanistan progress strides where being made. In the early 1950s-60s towards a more liberal and Westernized lifestyle. A pro-communist governor was elected and he looked to the communist nation for help with economic and military help. The Soviet Union then agrees to help the country. It was a briefly progressive era for Afghanistan. The countries that were involved are the US, Soviet Union, and Afghanistan. This relates to the Cold War, because Afghanistan was slowly becoming a communist government which means creating tension between the US. I am not sure exactly how this ended or started because in the articles I read there didn't seem to be much of a problem. I am guessing that the US and Afghanistan did not get along after becoming a communist government.

Mohammed mossadegh took all control of the british oil industry. They needed to settle the oil situation and was still unsettled after years. Soviets had to take action in Iran. United States and Great Britain were the main countries involved during the time, taking place in Iran with the soviets. The crisis resulted from the soviet union's reluctance to withdraw troops. President Truman bragged that his threats of a possible military confrontation had been the reason why. This is connected to the cold war because there was a situation dealing with countries involved.
