For the people of Rome the veil in front of their eyes have been striped away. They no longer believe in the prowess of the Roman Empire, and this is not helped by the corruption of the Government. (see government) It also didn't help that a flood decimated the coastal cities bringing with is the measles. They killed 75% of the population in the city of Rome.

These streets used to be full of people until the measles came

The Roman Empire was invaded constantly over a course of 60 years. 6 different tribes invaded. Some of them were the Huns, the Vandals, the Visigoths, and the Ostogoths. The Huns were Nomads, and the Romans thought as them as savage, animal-like people. They would attack on horse back and destroy everything in there path. They could endure bad weather conditions that gave them an advantage over the lazy, ill equipped soldiers.

A Hun
