They no longer believe in the prowess of the Roman Empire, and this is not helped by the corruption of the Government. (see government) It also didn't help that a flood decimated the coastal cities bringing with is the measles. They killed 75% of the population in the city of Rome.

The upper class didn't care about the lower class soldiers, and since the commanders were only upper class the situation got worse. The soldiers were lazy. The commanders did not enforce discipline. Some of them were the Huns, the Vandals, the Visigoths, and the Ostogoths. The Huns were Nomads, and the Romans thought as them as savage, animal-like people. They would attack on horse back and destroy everything in there path. They could endure bad weather conditions that gave them an advantage over the lazy, ill equipped soldiers.
