Returning to drawing after around a 6 month break felt odliy refreshing, especially in the sense that I haven't really delved into different techniques and styles since high school arts class. I felt like I knew how to draw something that could be identified but in the industry I'm training in (Architecture) Drawings need to portray a feeling or an emotions and not just be understood. I took a particular liking to 3d object drawings and 3d line markin, I took it as a challenge to how much I could give these 2d drawings a 3d feel. I found cross contour line drawing quite challenging, my drawings seemed busy as if there was to much going on. The small amount of shading that I did, gave a little more depth to the drawings. I found the biggest hurdle through week one was confidence, being surrounded by great artists and I not so much it was daunting. I had selected this course as I knew that I would have to improve my drawing techniques and learn more ways to portray space through sketching. It’s quite evident that practice is truly key in sketching.

Week 2 for me was extremely important, mainly because when I had employed shading techniques before in previous sketches I had only really used one technique. This week has really opened my eyes on how to get the most out of my sketches, how to really use depth to define your drawings through shading and tone. Although I know my drawings aren't masterpieces I am starting to understand the basics of tone and how to employ them to add important elements to my sketches, more specifically how to create a more realistic 3d feel. Using different techniques of blending and shading to show shadow and to show a difference between near and far objects. I found this week that if I got lost in my drawings, meaning that I just stop thinking and look and open my eyes to every nuance that the object provides, that I slowly start to understand space and how light is the master of everything that it shines upon. Shifting my thinking from drawing objects to appreciating space, light refractions and how objects just shift light and alter its appearance. Because its really the light that tells the story of an image not the objects themselves.

Week 3 Reflection

I enjoyed week three above all others so far, I feel as if I'm bringing spaces to life with a combination of skills learned from the weeks prior. I truly feel in control of what I am creating. A lot of of my sketches throughout my padlet are medieval influenced and this week I feel as if I can fully bring that passion into my art, specifically with the cobblestone corridor. Finally, perspective drawings have made me more aware of scale and proportions which are both important elements to a successful piece. Therefore I can say without a doubt that week 3 has strengthened my confidence in drawing free hand and boosted my creative imagination. Once again this weeks use of tone and shading has helped me in portraying dimensions in my perspective sketches. It is a truly wonderful feeling looking through my work from week 1 to this point and seeing how I can go from creating small 3D boxes with no meaning or correlation to space, to now where I feel as if each addition I add to my sketches develops meaning. In the perspective sketch of the pavilion I felt in control of space that I understood where to place pillars and walls rather then just trying to guess from the photo that I had taken days prior. I haven’t felt that in control of my sketches ever, although it has only been 3 short weeks the development of confidences and the shift in understand of how light, line and tone play a role in sketch has really aided in my understanding. It has undoubtably helped me find my identity in drawing and one day hopefully as an architect. I Know its very early days perhaps to early but I mustn’t shy away from the fact that the activities and techniques that I partake in now are and will be the foundations that I build my artistry as an architect upon.

Week 4 Reflection

Week 4 was odd for me as it became more about the thought behind the drawing, what makes the artist create what he or she creates. that has never been something I thought about, at least not on a sketching level. The prompted drawings were quite challenging for me, not in the sense that what I drew was challenging but I had to develop a sketch from my thoughts and I wasn’t necessarily accustomed to that. It wasn’t that I had no idea what to draw but it was that I had to many ideas of what to draw. I found my self flipping back and forwards from idea to idea until I dug deep enough into my brain to sketch something that I would, one enjoy and two, was something affiliated to the prompts. I found this exact problem with mind mapping. I begin with a kettle of all things and ended up in such a far away place that I felt creatively stumped on how my thoughts could take me unimaginable places in comparison to a kettle. It did get me thinking however ,on how, if I could, harness this creative outpouring of thoughts and words to develop and design structures for my other subjects. Although this comment does not lead to outcome specifically for the assignment it is from this task that I begin to understand creative thinking and how to use it, but also how it is in our creative thinking that we find our differences. A similar outcome was gained from the cutting and moving shapes activity, I found myself consistently questioning how on earth I could get an idea from mutating shapes. But, and yes there is a big but here, it was in that thought that I understood why I was doing this. I found that whilst doing this activity and the others this week that I was tapping into a creative world that I could not get to by any other means, call it a creative accident if you will. It is clear to me now that if I wish to become and effective artist and create pieces and design structures that truly stand alone in meaning. I must perfect the simple techniques taught in the past 5 weeks. Because it is with those tools and (creative accident) that I can create something that means something not only to myself but something that others can resonate to.
