Roch Theriault also called "Moses" started a cult in the woods of Canada in the 1970's. He told people he was the prophet and to follow him into the woods to create a peaceful community. He told the followers the world was ending and he then took advantage of the followers through abusive and disgusting acts. He called these acts purifying and then the world never ended. A follower escaped told the police and found Roch and then put him in prison where he later died.

Leadership - When it comes to leaders in the group it is just Roch. He has full power over everyone in the group. He was so manipulative that a psychiatrist was interviewed after speaking to Roch and even after the whole cult ended she said that he was a man of character and this was not his doing.

Beliefs - The main core belief was Roch himself and the idea that the world was ending and in order for them to survive they must listen to him. He performed purifiation session and once even a resurection. These were all acts of insane violence. One example without going into to much detail is that Roch would castrate the men in the group.

Control - Control was the main idea in the cult. You had to wear specific clothes, eat a certain way, and fully listen to Roch. People would work all day and then once they were all tired and burnt out, would listen to Roch speak about his beliefs. he would tire them out and control them emotionally and physically. Once he had a 2 year old child killed for misbehaving.

Impact - When Roch was in jail he still had vistors that were his followers come and visit him and they would become impregranted. This shows the impact he had on the followers. The idea of the frog in bioling water and stockhold syndrom were in play during his cult activity.

Exit - Once a women tried to escape and Roch found her before she left. He then cut off her arm and worse.

1 - Rejecting of mainstream society

2 - Isolation from family, friend, and society

3 - Insanely manipulative and abusive

4 - Extreme commitment

5 - Controlling leader

*What is interesting is that Roch believed the world was going to end in February of the year 1979 and not in the year 1999 of the start of 2000.

This Cult came after and during the counter culture movement & hippie movement
information on cults was very slim during this time making it difficult to know if you are in one
Mainly this cult was heavily isolated and undiscoverable from everyone becasue of its location in the woods and that it was a "church"

A) It was mostly women and acouple of men at first. The group then grew once Roch had babies with the women in the group.

B) These cults can prey on the vulnerable people often in anomic states in there lives

C) Roch said he provided a way of life that was "sin free" and that he could "save" you and his followers

D) Building off of anomie, Roch "provided" a place of peace and solitude away from society that keeps them safe

!) The Idea of communal living that came out of the 60's helped Roch pull people into living with eachother in the woods

!) New religious sects were being created during this time which worked in Roch's favor
