The Great Schism, precipitating from increasing differences between the Eastern and Western Christian Churches, is one of the most significant events for the church in the history of Christianity. For considerable time following the Great Schism, relations between the East and the West remained normal, and it was only both churches who had severed the relations. Theological reforms began to emerge from various reformers, and the churches decided to agree, no matter that their ideologies were somewhat contrary. A statement was issued in 1965, when Pope VI met with the Eastern Patriarch, Athenagoras, to acknowledge the misunderstanding in the earlier years of the church, followed by a visit to Pope John Paul II in Rome, paid by the Patriarch, Bartholomews I in 1995According to Simon Newman, "these reforms had helped shape the Christian church that we know and recognise today, including beliefs such that; the Pope is not an absolute monarch and that the community of the faithful can exercise the necessary power via its chosen representatives". As a result, there are still many branches of Christian churches, however we can freely live and attend them without the fear and threat of being invaded or attacked by other churches, which has been recognised and settled through the Ecumenical Councils and peace formed between the East and the West.

The Great Schism was the break of communion between what are now the Eastern Orthodox and Catholic Churches. While the church was unified for almost a thousand years they developed differences in the practises that have separated them. The great schism played a major role in the history of Christianity. The direct effects of the 1054 Schism were that calls for theological reforms began to emerge from various reformers. Many of these reformers were excommunicated and their followers burnt at the stake. The Great Schism has influenced the movement and beliefs of the Catholic Church that is practised in society today.
