These books are ranged for students K-3. Danneberg has written a book untitled "First Day Jitters" which I would read to my class on the first day of school.
Also in the Jitters Series are books that deal with nerves about test taking, picture day, ect. Summary: The book follows Sarah Hartwell's morning before the first day of school. Sarah gives every excuse to her dad on why she cannot attend the first day of school. Her dad forces her into the car and starts driving Sarah to the school. Mr. Hartwell points out the principal when they are pulling up to the school. The principal walks Sarah into the classroom and introduces her to the class. Then you flip the page and find out that Sarah Hartwell is the teacher.

Activity: I will read this book to my students on the first day of school to show them that everyone gets nervous, even teachers, and that is ok. Summary: This book follows a real life person, John Muir, who was alive in 1868. We learn that John Muir thinks of Yosemite Falls as a paradise, so much so that he builds his own cabin in a way that the river flows through it. He ended up working at a sawmill where we starts living at and he desperately misses the waterfall. One night late at night he goes on an adventure to get as close to the falls as he can. He ends up scaling up the mountain side and end up behind the waterfall where we almost gets swept away by the water. Luckily the wind picked up and made a curtain in the waterfall and John Muir was able to make his way back down the mountain side. Then once he was safe and sound the sound of the waterfall was enough for him.

Activity: I would use this book to help introduce the idea of a schema to my students. We would start by looking at the title of the book. I would do this by saying, "After reading the title, who can raise their hand quietly and tell me what they think the story might be about?" Then we would talk about the time frame of when this book takes place. Summary: Mary was at school when the emergency siren started roaring from the mines. She couldn't help but worry about her dad being hurt. When she gets home she is so worried about her dad being the one that was hurt in the mine today, and he was. Her mom leaves to go to the hospital and her aunt comes to watch her. Mary started having flashbacks when her aunt would do things differently then what would typically go on at home. She would always snap back to reality but her mind kept wondering to how happy her life was when she had both her mom and dad in the house. She finds out her dad comes back home and he is missing his leg, but life goes on how it did before.

Activity: I think that this would be a good book to do a literacy circle to. Activity: I think this is a good book to have in a classroom library because kids can take it home and try the experiences.
