According to Sambora in the Raso (n.d.) interview Bon Jovi wanted to play Rock and Roll and let the music speak for itself. Raso herself noted that despite their success and influence they “kept their feet on the ground”.

Bon Jovi’s style and energy inspired my desires as a youth to become a front man and be involved in the music industry.

Chris Cornell

Cornell was an octave jumping belter (Wood, 2017), and front man for Soundgarden and Audioslave in the grunge scene. Wood also compared Cornell to Roger Daltrey and Robert Plant because of his style and influence.

The growly vocals of grunge suited my singing style, and the heavy alternative rock sound with distorted guitars and heavy lyrics of integrity emotionally resonated with me.

Aerosmith

Aerosmithith formed in the1970s performing blues rock, with melodramatic ballads. According to (Bon Jovi – the Vogue, 2016) their style influenced bon Jovi, Deep Purple and many other artists.

Both lead vocalists have paved the way for my songwriting as they inspired me to read poetry and undertake a song writing course.

Led Zeppelin

As described by (Fast, 2024) Led Zeppelin were innovators in heavy metal. They used a lateness in their style, playing slightly out of sync with the tempo. Guitarist Page also created different effects by playing with violin bows.Their influence extended to Cornell who played “Thank You” in his last concert (Taysom, 2023).

Zeppelin showed me how to appreciate the “feel” of music, not just the perceived sound.

Bruce Springsteen

Spingsteen influenced Bon Jovi musically and personally. In an interview from Kabak (2023) both artists stated they experienced the “imposter syndrome” where artists feel their music can make them feel fake. Both artists also came from New Jersey, and were a product of that area’s music.

Their working class roots touched me deeply as I came from a similar background, experiencing emotions like them.

Alice Cooper

Theatrical performer Alice Cooper pioneered shock-rock as described by Bauer (2024), this included mock executions and stabbing baby dolls on stage.

Cornell wrote two songs for Cooper and they influenced my interest in dark performances. I also experienced working on productions such as Jesus Christ Superstar, as did Alice Cooper.

Van Halen

Rock and roll hall of fame artists noted for innovative guitar sounds as described in Britannica (2024). Despite multiple line up changes, Eddie Van Halen’s singular guitar style remained and influenced numerous other 80’s heavy metal bands.

Van Halen motivated me to record my own music. Initially I did this using a Sony Walkman, and now I am studying to use studio equipment.

The Beatles

Cornell was inspired to perform cover songs, which influenced my early music-making efforts. During my formative years the popularity of these artists intrigued and interested me, as did the music industry in general.
