Perched on the edge of the crisp linens of the hospital bed, I said to my mom, “Is Bev here today?” As her Taxol chemotherapy was being pumped into her veins, she responded, “I sure hope so, I can’t make it through a Chemo day without her.” A few moments later, we let out a sigh of relief as we see her briskly bounce into the hospital room with a smile across her face. Immediately, both of use felt seen. Cared for. Loved.

My mom fought terminal cancer for thirteen years, and for as long as I remember, her nurse practitioner and closest confidant in her journey with her cancer was her Nurse Practitioner, Bev Wilson.

Me and Bev have always had a special relationship being I had met her on multiple occasions while accompanying my mom to appointments. She always fascinated me with her complete and utter care for every single one of her patients. She allowed herself to get attached and form bonds even while knowing some of her patients may not have much longer on earth. She had something that just drew me to her.

I had to find out more about why.

I always knew I wanted to be a Nurse Practitioner too. It’s the one thing I was always sure of. My mom was and she had a huge impact on me, it was the profession seemingly made for me. Bev as well greatly influenced my thinking in 'Why nursing?' And specifically, 'Why oncology?' the field I desire to be in as well. I wanted to know more about what she does on a daily basis and the pitfalls and rejoices of her job. In interviewing her, I got all that and so much more.

After listening and relistening and editing some more, I was feeling antsy. Ready to act on my passions and start my career. Ready to go off to college and begin studying something I actually care about. Ready to care for people the same way I was cared for in my mother’s cancer journey. This conversation reminded me why I want to do what I want to do—to make a difference in people’s lives at a time when they need it most.

I could just hear the passion in Bev’s voice, even when talking about the challenges her job brings up in her life. She’s dedicated and determined, something I’d admire so greatly. Someday, I hope to do the same of what she does on the daily—make a difference.
