When it comes to war it can be a very controversial topic. Over the years the attitudes have majorly changed and resulted in different opinions on the topic. Men still have shivers due to what happened and many are still traumatized from the events that occurred. Initially people were all for war as they believed they were helping out their country until they realised that the war was a horrible time to be in. The pain it caused and the lives that were lost were not worth the end result and many people now look back on the war negatively.

Attitudes/Values against World War 1

Soldiers’ attitudes towards World War 1 known as ‘The Great War’ changed throughout the duration of the conflict. At the outbreak of war the general attitude to war was positive; the British public had feelings of euphoria. Men were eager to enlist and were happy to fight for their country. Despite objection from conscientious objectors, support for the war remained relatively high throughout, however the positive attitude of the British people soon became to dwindle. There were several reasons for this, such as the increasing number of casualties and the reality of trench welfare. Over the four years, the public felt a mixture of fear, curiosity and anticipation, spurred by the realisation that this was a struggle for national preservation. Therefore attitudes have changed due the amount of lives lost and the devastating outcome it had.

Attitudes/Values against World War 2

During World War 2 many people were very negative towards the whole thing. The impact on the economy and workforce was huge and many women were left to look after farms and homes independently. Not only this but locals attitudes against world war 2 were also negative as they were invaded forced to simulate in the invading culture. For example if a Nazi was to walk into Poland the polish men would have to behave as the Nazis. This left many families struggling and this spiralled the negative attitude downwards even more. It was the largest armed conflict in human history and affected the public mentally and physically. People were dragged into it and left to survive in such horrendous conditions. If you were to ask someone who was involved in WW2 I can guarantee that they won’t have many positive things to say.

Comparing these attitudes

From World War 1 to World War 2 the attitudes stayed relatively the same. In the beginning everyone was very curious yet eager to see what was to come. Although this was the case, attitudes towards both Wars became very negative as many men died and women were not allowed to enlist. Families were left struggling without the father being home and it had a major impact on the economy and workforce. It was extremely hard on the women as they had to take up all of the jobs of the males did to make sure the country could run. During the four year period many things went downhill and society began to realise that they needed men to run the country efficiently. Therefore the attitudes towards World War 1 and World War 2 were fairly poor.

How they have changed

These attitudes have changed as everyone is completely against war and no one is 'curious' about what may happen. Everyone now knows the aftermath and the pain both World Wars caused. Initially people were all for war, as they believed they were helping out their country. Although towards the end of WW1 many believed it was a horrible time to be in. Thousands of men died fighting for their country, some not even making it off the helicopter. 'The channel 7 chopper still chills me to my feet'. This quote shows a man that was affected by PTSD and shows the affects war had on people. Therefore over the years peoples attitudes towards war has negatively changed and people have realised what war really results in.

.Compare to 2018

Attitudes towards war in 2018 are very different now. Women are now able to enlist into the army without any discrimination or questioning. Although we are prepared for a war if it was to occur, many countries are extremely against it as the last world war was the largest armed conflict in human history. It affected the public intensely and left many soldiers with mental issues from the events that occurred. People would much prefer for all countries to get along rather than fight and kill each other. Although in 2018 we are now prepared for anything thrown at us everyone is still left very scarred from previous wars. It is something everyone would like to avoid.

Conclusion
As a conclusion I can say that the attitudes and values towards world war 1 and world war 2 have changed over the years. Although in the beginning society was for war this attitude slowly changed over the years. Once they realised the pain it caused and problems war caused everyone was against it. For example women were left to take over many jobs and independently look after their children not even knowing if their husbands would come home. Many lives were lost and the after math was shocking. It was not a great time to be in and majority of people in 2018 would not want to experience the war.
