In the 1980s the military wing of the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization) directed a campaign against Israel. In response Israel bombed Palestinian towns. In 1982 Israel invaded Lebanon just to destroy strongholds in Palestinian villages. In 1987 the Palestinians expressed their feelings in an uprising against the Israelis. They did this by boycotts and different types of violent attacks against the Israelis. (Module 30 & Page 1200)

Fall of the Berlin Wall (1989)

Highlighting the tensions between the Soviet Union and the United States stood the Berlin Wall. It began construction in 1961, separating East Berlin from West Berlin, its goal to keep East Berliners, Ossi, from leaving. Beginning as a simple border, many advancements were made to the wall, including barbed wire, minefields, dogs, watchtowers, and the addition of a Grenzmauer. Although the walls stood dauntingly throughout the Cold War, many escape attempts were still made. In June of 1987, Ronald Reagan, standing before the Berlin Wall, demanded Mr. Gorbachev tore down the wall. In 1989 huge demonstrations led by protesters demanded the right to travel freely. After Erich Honecker's resignation, the new East German leader, Egon Krez, assumed he could re-establish stability by allowing people to leave East Germany. In November, 1989, he opened the Berlin Wall, thus reuniting East and West Berlin after a lengthy 28 years. By the end of 1989, the German Communist party had ceased to exist. While most nations worked to prevent and contain conflicts, forging treaties to limit the manufacturing, trade, and testing of weapons, Iraq proved otherwise. Creating their first chemical weapons program in 1981 (Codename Project 922), and their first nerve agents in 1984, Iraq posed a significant threat to international security. It was also highly suspected Saddam Hussein, the Iraqi leader, had infelicitous plans to develop biological and nuclear weapons, on top of their already harrowing chemical weapons. This tension and distrust between Saddam Hussein’s regime and the United States was the precursor to both the Persian-Gulf War in the 1990s and the Iraq War in the 2000s.(Module 32 & Page 1285/1286)
