CHARLOTTE STRAWFORD

Rolfe’s Reflective Model – Sorry went over….458 words. Haven’t included references....not sure if we had to for the padlet one!

What?

A previous experience I would like to reflect on, is working in a Mental Health Team as a Mental health Support Worker. This particular experience involved me working with a young person who had attempted multiple suicide attempts via overdose, and on this particular visit, the young person was not back from school yet, and so I provided some support for mum beforehand. This took place in the kitchen which was small, mum was making us a drink and became emotional very quickly whilst I was on the opposite side of the kitchen. This escalated into mum becoming angry and quite quickly I was concerned for my welfare and professional boundaries on being spoken to like this, whilst trying being empathic. Mum was clearly in distress and not giving me opportunity to speak and I was struggling with being ‘verbally attacked’ due to personal issues going on also.

So What?

In this situation I wanted to show I was being as empathetic as possible, and being honest with mum that whilst I couldn’t put myself in her shoes, I was hear to listen and do what I could for the young person within my capabilities. I wanted to make it clear that these were my boundaries in what I could do, and that everyone has limits of what they can do currently – including herself, and that she needed to try and take care of herself too. I wanted to try and empower the parent but this was difficult considering the ‘crisis’ nature of the situation, and I knew she needed support too. Mum was demanding I contact others in my team to do ‘more’. It was acknowledging in this visit the emotional state of the family but also being realistic in my professional boundaries. When there on my visit physically I felt intimidated and sometimes unsafe.

Now What?

Reflecting, I should have first of all positioned myself on a seat or position that was near an exit to the house. Then this perhaps would have helped with my feelings of safety. Looking back also, I would have stopped the visit earlier and explained to mum that I wasn’t happy to be spoken to the way I was, if empathetic statements weren’t helping defuse the situation. To help with my personal feelings and the effect this visit had I did have an immediate supervision over the phone, however I do feel that another planned more in-depth supervision would have been beneficial to reflect on how this could have been handled better, what went well etc. Considering my own well-being also and home-work life balance – I perhaps on reflection would have spoken to my team beforehand and asked for support with difficult visits.

WHAT
I struggle to keep to the interview question. When in an interview I find my self waffling along and not actually answering the question. This can be because I feel I have so much I want to say and due to nerves I just want to keep talking. However this normally happens because I don’t understand the question. I am afraid to ask.

SO WHAT
This sometimes can be quite beneficial as it allows you to explain what your point of view. However it takes me off topic and I have not really answered the question. This look like I don’t know what I am talking about or that I unsure of the question asked. I need to be more aware of the silence and not afraid to leave a silence. Making this decision to stop talking, allows you to be truly in control of what you are saying. Keeping answers to the point and concise, will allow your answer to seem more confident and informing.

Also I need to not be afraid to ask the interviewer to repeat the question. Making sure you fully understand the question, will mean that you can give a concise and confident answer. I have found before that when I have done this, and taken time to think about my answer, I have had positive comments from the panel. It is very important to have a clear understanding of what you are being asked. This leads me on to understanding how important it is to make sure that the CYP understands my questions. Therefore I must leave space for them to ask me to explain and prompt them if they understand.

NOW WHAT

From this is am going to bring this into my work as a practitioner. I am going to make sure that I check back on the CYP understanding. I am going to make sure that after each part of agenda I check back on their understanding. I will also get them to repeat back to me.

What

In my last role, I began to have concerns for a client that my colleague used to link work. I noticed a dramatic change in his behaviour and style; he began growing his hair, wearing dark colours, and would frequently discuss moving to London to start a revolution, and even showed me a design for a sigil he had created. It was also evident that his paranoia and delusional thoughts were increasing, referring to “the war” that was coming and referring to himself as a ‘warrior’. I approached my colleague and expressed my concerns that his behaviour was indicative of radicalisation and asked for support in discussing this was our manager as well as making a referral to the Prevent team. My colleague became instantly defensive of the client and dismissed this, stating I was “looking into it too much”. His behaviour escalated over the weeks and I ended up following my instinct and making the referral anyway, much to my colleague’s dismay.

So what.

Unfortunately, the Prevent team as well as the police had to become very involved with the client as his behaviour and risk escalated extensively, and they felt his actions were a cause for concern. I felt disappointed in myself for not contacting them sooner, and frustrated at my colleague for dismissing my concerns, stating that “I would increase his mistrust of professionals within society” and “damage her and his rapport” if I sought support. During supervision with my manager shortly after this, I reflected that I was angry at myself for not following my gut instincts sooner, as well as angry at my colleague for putting her friendly relationship that she had built with said client before his own welfare. Since then I have reflected that it is often difficult to manage situations of risk within a team when there is a difference of opinion. However, I have also learned that regardless of colleague relationships, the welfare of the client is fundamental above all else.

Now what

I have used this experience to guide my professional practice since; feeling a new sense of confidence in my own intuition and the ability to take responsibility for the consequences. Whilst I will always value the experience and insight of my colleagues, the experience made me realise that I needed to be more confident in taking initiative and going on my own professional intuition, even if it doesn’t coincide with the beliefs of my colleagues.
