Lejay and max

Traffic pollution in Singapore, while relatively controlled compared to many other global cities, still remains a concern due to the high number of vehicles on the roads. The city-state’s dense urban environment, combined with its extensive road network, contributes to traffic congestion and vehicular emissions.

Key Aspects of Traffic Pollution in Singapore:

Vehicle Emissions: Despite the government's strict regulations on vehicle emissions, the large number of cars, buses, and trucks still contribute to air pollution. These emissions mainly consist of nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter (PM), which can degrade air quality and harm public health.

Congestion: Traffic congestion is a common issue in Singapore, especially during peak hours. It exacerbates pollution, as vehicles spend more time idling, which leads to increased emissions of harmful gases and particulate matter.

Government Measures: The Singaporean government has introduced various measures to mitigate traffic pollution. These include the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) system to manage congestion, strict vehicle emission standards, and incentives for electric vehicles (EVs). The government also promotes public transportation to reduce reliance on private cars.

https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/fatal-road-accidents-up-in-2023-many-motorists-have-irresponsible-driving-behaviours-traffic-police

Group 1

kenji , edgar , evan and jayden

Air pollution

1) Air pollution is primarily caused by human activities such as industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, and agricultural practices. Factories and power plants release large amounts of harmful chemicals like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere, while cars and trucks emit carbon monoxide and particulate matter. Additionally, agricultural activities contribute to air pollution through the release of methane and ammonia, and deforestation exacerbates the problem by reducing the number of trees that can absorb pollutants. Natural sources, such as wildfires, volcanic eruptions, and dust storms, also contribute to air pollution, but human actions remain the leading cause.

2) Air pollution harms health by causing breathing problems and heart disease, damages ecosystems, and contributes to climate change. Pollutants like carbon dioxide lead to extreme weather and rising sea levels.

3) https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/135-million-early-deaths-since-1980-linked-to-air-pollution-with-spikes-during-climate-events
