For parties of two or more, you can choose the buffet option for just 3,980 yen per person—around 180 RMB. Our favorite was the orange juice—we ended up ordering four glasses in total!

The Cost of Sustainability: Shinkansen vs Domestic Flights in Japan

Japan’s Shinkansen (bullet trains) are renowned for their speed, comfort, and eco-friendliness. As a sustainable mode of transportation, they produce significantly less carbon emissions compared to airplanes. However, one challenge remains: cost.

Traveling on the Shinkansen can be significantly more expensive than taking a domestic flight, even for similar distances. For budget-conscious travelers, this creates a tough dilemma: should we prioritize sustainability over affordability?

While Japan’s bullet train network is an engineering marvel and a symbol of green mobility, the cost disparity raises questions about accessibility. Could reducing ticket prices or providing more subsidies encourage more people to opt for trains over planes?

As we consider the future of sustainable travel, it’s crucial to address these barriers to adoption. What do you think—how can we make eco-friendly travel options more accessible without compromising their quality?

Carved from a single piece of jadeite, it brilliantly mimics the appearance of a fresh cabbage, complete with delicate green and white hues that resemble natural gradients. What makes it even more remarkable are the intricately carved details, including a tiny grasshopper and katydid perched among the leaves, symbolizing fertility and prosperity in Chinese culture. In the Weiwuying Mural Village, there is a work called "Four Divine Beasts in the Forest". This creation gives street art a different meaning, and through the painting, it makes the viewer think about the importance of conserving the ecological environment. In the painting, a nighttime luminous effect is also added to the four mythical creatures, which gives the mural a new meaning at night through the ingenuity of the painting.

On top of the hill, a lighthouse standing alone. According to Prof. Lewis, Spain and France is just across the English Channel, while we were so eager to fly across the channel/Birling Gap to enjoy the sunshine. During our way up, we observed that most tourists were hiking with friends or dogs. Some were even cycling up to the top!

This cafe has also taken its own actions to reduce food waste. For example, a 25p discount will be given for each cup of coffee if you bring your own reusable cup. Waste management is also an important part of sustainable tourism, which requires efforts from many stakeholders.

This photo was taken inside the elevator of the ibis style hotel. It reminded me of the sexual tourism existing in Thailand mentioned by Dr. Wang in Course 5003. However, what is shown in the poster indicates that there is sexual tourism involving children, which goes against social moral principles and runs counter to the goals of the tourism industry and should be stopped. According to the information I searched online, this phenomenon is a rather serious social problem in the UK. Many pedophiles will sexually exploit children in places where supervision is relatively weak. But it can also be seen from this poster that both NGOs and the government are making different efforts to limit the occurrence of such behavior.

In Tsugaru City, Aomori, there’s a captivating spot called Nebuta Village. With heavy snowfall over the past few days, the place was nearly empty when we visited—just our group. Despite this, the staff welcomed us with warmth and enthusiasm, even asking about our nationality and offering a guided tour in Chinese. I noticed the guide carried cards for four languages: Chinese, Japanese, English, and Korean，which is a thoughtful touch for visitors from different countries.

The highlight of the visit was the 三味线 performance. To our surprise, the performer was Kasai Yoriyuki, a three-time consecutive champion of the Tsugaru Shamisen World Tournament. Experiencing such a masterful performance in such an intimate setting was truly unforgettable.

The souvenir shop added another layer to the experience. Not only could we purchase handmade crafts, but we could also watch artisans at work—observing their tools, materials, and processes up close.

This visit to Nebuta Village showed a perfect blend of authenticity and craftsmanship—definitely worth the trip!

In December, nearly every shop window in the UK is presented with exquisitely crafted Christmas decorations, making this a compelling reason for tourists to choose the UK as their travel destination during the Christmas season. While searching for dinner, we strolled through the streets of Bath. We frequently took out our cameras to capture the scenic street view. However, many stores, even when closed, keep their Christmas lights illuminated. While this enhances the beauty of the nightscape, it also significantly increases electricity consumption and light pollution during a long period. For the sake of sustainable tourism, it is important to find a balance between showcasing the city’s image and environmental protection.

Overcrowding in London

During our visit to the British Museum, we encountered a Russian lady who had traveled and even lived in many countries around the world, like Japan and Switzerland. However, she told us, "I've seen Christmas in many cities, but I think London's is the worst." We were surprised about her answer, and she explained that it was due to the overwhelming crowds on London's streets, which made the experience quite unpleasant. This demonstrates that London's issue of overcrowding has significantly impacted its urban image and its appeal. We also encountered this issue while visiting popular tourist attractions such as Regent Street's Angel Lights, the Tower Bridge, and Big Ben. On Regent Street, the traffic was heavily congested due to numerous tourists taking photos along the sides of the street. Additionally, the dense crowds made theft and robbery incidents more frequent than ever.

Due to heritage conservation considerations, the surrounding areas of Stonehenge are now surrounded by guardrails, making it impossible for tourists to enter and observe Stonehenge up close; But on that day, we accidentally discovered that there were still "rebellious" tourists who would cross the fence and enter Stonehenge. Due to the distance, we did not observe how the scenic area staff responded to this situation. However, there are still some concerns that the tourist supervision of Stonehenge is not strict enough. We feel that similar cultural heritage protection still needs to be closely monitored, because if such uncivilized tourist behavior is more extreme (because we did not conduct inspections at the entrance) and they pull out paint/sharp objects, it may cause artificial damage to Stonehenge. Therefore, we believe that Stonehenge still needs to strengthen tourist supervision.

In the UK, birds are completely unafraid of people and move freely among crowds. Sometimes, they skim over people’s heads at low altitudes; other times, they wait for people to throw food near bus stops or line up on buildings at tourist attractions to observe the crowds. This reminds me of Bian Zhilin’s poem: ‘You stand on the bridge enjoying the view, while those enjoying the view watch you from a tower.’ （你站在桥上看风景，看风景的人在楼上看你）To a certain extent, this phenomenon reflects the success of British tourism in promoting sustainability and fostering a more harmonious relationship between people and nature.

The number of visitors to some important exhibits shows periodic fluctuations. With a cycle of every 5-8 minutes, the number of visitors to an important exhibit will go through a peak-trough-peak change.

Taking the Three Bodhisattvas mural in the Asian Gallery as an example, during a one-hour observation period from 15:30 to 16:30, this cyclical pattern occurred 10 times. During peak times, the number of visitors typically ranged from 15 to 30, with the highest peak occurring at 15:41, when 34 visitors were present. During low periods, there were instances where no visitors were observing the exhibit, which occurred 7 times in total.

This phenomenon could be attributed to the herd mentality of museum-goers. For visitors who are unfamiliar with the exhibits, the number of people around an exhibit might be an important factor in deciding whether to explore it in detail. In other words, visitors may be more inclined to check out exhibits that have a higher number of people around them. Therefore, when a group of visitors leaves, the number of people decreases, leading to a drop in interest and a decrease in visitor numbers, which marks the low period. As soon as another group or individual begins to approach the exhibit, the number of visitors increases, leading to renewed interest and a rise in visitor numbers, reaching a peak.

During the observation of another more popular exhibit, the Rosetta Stone, from 16:45 to 17:45, the periodic fluctuations were observed to have a longer cycle, typically ranging from 10 to 15 minutes, with smaller changes in the number of visitors. Even during low periods, more than 20 people could be found gathered around the exhibit, and during peak periods, about 35 visitors would cluster around it.

I saw the mounted police in England, so cool, so powerful. After understanding, in the streets with many people and things, horses actually have better mobility. When the British gather, like New Year's Eve, a big event, a large area crowded, it's very effective to use mounted police to control the flow of people.

The British Museum

In the British Museum, my companion and I were immersed in the precious cultural relics on display. At that moment, a Russian lady, wearing a smile, signaled to us whether we could take some photos for her. We readily agreed and carefully selected angles to capture her beautiful moments in front of the cultural relics.

After taking the photos, my companion naturally started a conversation with the Russian lady. They talked about their insights into the cultural relics at hand and then moved on to the historical and cultural characteristics of their respective countries. I listened quietly from the sidelines, and from an onlooker's perspective, I deeply felt that this was a very friendly exchange and interaction between different cultures across national boundaries.

Being in the British Museum, where cultural relics from all over the world are exhibited, we can indeed admire the splendid treasures of civilization from other countries. Although it is undeniable that some of these cultural relics were looted here in history.

At this moment, when people from different countries gather because of these cultural relics and start to talk sincerely, sharing their knowledge and feelings, these cultural relics seem to be endowed with new meaning. Civilization thus truly takes on a vivid significance. It is no longer just a deposit of history but also a bridge connecting the emotions and thoughts of different ethnic groups.
