Every day I strive to live a life full of happiness which is why I always have a smile on my face. All of my past job experiences have centered around helping children with either their developmental or emotional needs. For the past 4 years, I have worked in an after-school program and summer camp program with children ages 6-13. With being in the field with children, I have been able to interact with several different children that come from different paths in life and require different accommodations based on their individual needs. My experience working with children has definitely been the driving force in choosing to become an educator. Outside of school, I enjoy reading, exploring new places in NYC, and painting. I currently work as a substitute teacher as well as a director of an non-profit after-school program. I also have experience working as a dance teacher as a huge hobby throughout my life was competitive dancing. My favorite genre of dance is tap. I absolutely love all food but I can not live life without eating my mom’s empanadas. I spent this summer working the Summer Rising program so it has been pretty hectic to say the least however, my favorite way to unwind is by binge watching 90 Day Fiancé.

This past school year I took over a maternity leave for a remote kindergarten class. Their graduation was in-person and it was the first time we were all in the same space. I have included the picture above.Truly an experience I will never forget!

👩🏽‍🏫 When I was in high school, I would tutor high school and middle school students after class. I was also a teacher's assistant for classes such as Global History and Spanish (two of my favorites). Since 2019 I have been working at an afterschool program where I plan and lead activities that allow students to explore their self-identity and the world around them. Over the summer, I worked as a day camp mentor. 

✈️At the end of my summer this year I took a trip to Orlando, Florida 🍊and it was awesome! I hope to continue traveling and visiting new places that will allow me to see much more of what the world has to offer.

🎓In the future, I hope to get my Master's degree and work in NYC public schools. My passion for teaching began when I first arrived in NYC back in 2005. My first grade teacher is my inspiration and I strive to be an equally compassionate, patient, creative, and an optimistic educator like her. I love working with children. They are such interesting little individuals who have such creativity, ideas, and fun personality and as a teacher, I want help children expand and encourage their creativity and help them become productive citizens in today's world.

Starting in high school,  I started tutoring elementary students ranging from first graders to sixth graders, and even kindergarteners at times. Most of my tutees were bilingual and ELL students. In addition to English, I speak 3 other languages (Bengali, Hindi, Urdu) and I used this tool of language to communicate with my tutees and give them instruction in English and in their native language. Over time, I realized that while I love teaching  general education students (grades 1-6), I  also want to teach ELL and ENL students. Thus, after graduating from Hunter, I plan on pursing my Master's in TESOL Prek-12. 

This summer, I worked as a 3rd grade Teaching Assistant for an organization called GO Project. This is my second summer working with them. GO Project's mission interrelates to my teaching philosophy. GO Project sees students holistically and as a whole child and I also believe that all children are capable of doing things if they have the proper guidance, proper tools, and an abundance of support from adults and/or mentors. This summer, I was able to get a lot of teaching experience that I missed due to fieldwork being cancelled. I was able to administer pre and post running records to assess my students' reading growth as well as their stamina. I was able to use this assessment as a tool in differentiating my lessons and providing appropriate scaffolds for certain students. I also developed SEL lessons using the Sanford Harmony curriculum and these lessons really helped me build a relationship with my students.

In the future, I strive to get my Master's degree in TESOL as well an Advanced certificate in teaching Gifted and Talented and an extension in Special Education: Learning Disabilities. I want to be very equipped with the education and pedagogical skills of teaching students of all abilities so that I can help my students reach their full potential and dream big.

My career history so far has been a mix of things. I used to tutor elementary school students, helping them with their homework and to prepare for standardized tests. I have also worked as a receptionist at an IT company. On Saturdays for the past five years, I have volunteered at a Saturday school program called GO! Project which helps falling behind students from low-income families. At Hunter, I am a Peer mentor for my Scholars Cohort, Athena. 

Some of my hobbies include: reading, journaling, watching TV shows, art, and I used to dance (I quit after 10 years.) My goal for this year is to read 100 books and I have passed the 70 mark, I’m on my 75th book as of today. I have way too many favorite books, but one of my favorites is Harry Potter (I’m a Slyhterin🐍) and The ACOTAR series. I have several journals that I like to keep: a reading journal where I track what and how much I read; a movie/tv show journal where I collage pictures from my favorites; and a life journal where I track my mood, document life experiences, and just other general things. Some of my favorite TV shows include The Office, Brooklyn 99, Criminal Minds, Friends, Love Island UK, New Girl, and Game of Thrones and I used to watch a lot of Asian dramas.  I also love Marvel movies, Harry Potter, and Pirates of The Caribbean.

My summer plans are unknown as of now, but I hope to travel more since a lot of my plans were cancelled due to COVID. I would also like to maybe work in a summer camp with kids.

This will be my first year as a teacher at a charter school in Queens.  I will be teaching first grade and I am very excited but nervous! I started working with kids when I was 16 and I truly fell in love working with kids. However, I did explore different career options such as pre-engineering, computer networking and I even majored in biology at some point. I loved all of these options, but that love did not compare to the love I have for kids and teaching. I worked in different after school programs and summer camps which is how I figured out that working with kids was meant for me. 

Over the summer, I was working as a summer school teacher. I had 10 rising second grade students and it was fun to see them grow and become friends (since they haven't been in school since March 2020). I only had a 13 day break and during my break, I went to Six Flags, Washington DC, Atlantic City and I also went on a helicopter ride. 

Overall, I love to go out and explore the city. I love going on adventures and trying out new things. I also like to stay in my room and watch Netflix shows and listen to music. I cannot wait to travel to Mexico and see my family again. I fell in love with my job as a teacher assistant and decided to pursue my masters so I could become a teacher. This summer, I worked as a teacher aide in the charter school mentioned above. This was my third summer working there, but this summer I worked as a "floater". This means that they place me in a classroom where they need assistance in that day. Being a floater allowed me to experience the diversity of students within the school and better equipped me to work with a plethora of students with varying special needs in the future.

My hobbies include painting, drawing, listening to music, and hanging out with my family and friends. I spent this summer working as a room lead at a summer camp with my own classroom full of 25 children aged 4-7. My role was to keep the children entertained and focused on activities. Specialists would come into my class with lessons in prevention (promotes positive behavior), general education, STEM, art, music, and physical education. It was my job to offer students more activities in between these planned lessons. In the past I have worked for this same company (Youth Enrichment Services) at their summer camps and after school programs. During quarantine I worked on Zoom with middle schoolers, but before then I worked as the STEM specialist (delivering lessons) for different age groups (ages 4-14). Before working for Youth Enrichment Services I interned at a preschool inside Longwood High School and in the education department of the Long Island Aquarium. Working with children has undoubtedly influenced my decision to pursue a career as an educator. I started working with kids at a young age and have fallen in love with it ever since. I tutored students from ages six to ten, and I worked in an early pre/k daycare. Over the summer, my husband and I went to Yemen to visit our family and friends. Since I speak two languages (Arabic and English), I volunteered to work in an after-school program in Yemen and tutored students in English.
