Quest: Going to New York City from Pennsylvania

Quester: Holden Caulfield

Place to go: New York City

Stated reason to go there: To escape Pencey until Wednesday when his winter break is supposed to start

Challenges and trials en route: Holden has to find a hotel, navigate the situation with Maurice and Sunny (prostitute), navigate his experience with Mr. Antolini, and his final test/ trial is at the carousel, realizing that growing up is inevitable.

The real reason for the journey: Holden's journey involves self-discovery and accepting the past. Holden must realize that everyone grows up (even Phoebe) and that try as he might, there is no way to preserve childhood innocence. There is also no way to bring his brother, Allie, back, nor to create or preserve someone like Allie.

Although the carousel scene in Catcher in the Rye has nothing to due with food, it is an example of communion.

The chapter explains that communion does not need to relate to food, it is any experience that creates a bond between two people.

The carousel scene in Catcher in the Rye has no connection to food, however, it does strengthen the already very special bond between Phoebe and Holden.

Throughout the entire novel Phoebe is the only person that Holden feels truly understands him and Holden feels such a pure happiness watching her.

Additionally, Holden realizes that although their relationship will change as they get older (he won't be able to always protect her) it will always be just as strong.

Thanksgiving brings family and friends together to "break bread" among each other.

The intricate meal is an excuse, if you will, for family and friends to come together (some times after not seeing each other for a long time).

When one invites someone to their Thanksgiving dinner it tells that person that they belong.
