What is Virtual Collaboration?

Virtual Collaboration is working with others via digital means. It can be as simple as an email or a skype call, or even as complex as working on a video game together from across the world.

How is it used in the media industry?
Virtual Collaboration is used constantly in the media industry. Freelance graphic designers, 3d modelers, and even film makers do the majority of their work virtually. The client or producer will send them a brief in an email, they will then begin working to the spec and then send it off to them to view and comment. The project lead will then make comments on their work, sometimes just adding annotations straight over the film or photoshop document and send it back. There is a constant digital conversation throughout the work process.

Sometimes a whole team will be working on the same game, or film from different locations, each adding in their own part to the document digitally and sending it off to ther other people in the team. They may have conversations via skype or email about their progress. The whole development team may only meet up in person once a month or even less. The digital world has allowed us to stay connected and work together from across the globe.

As a year group we are going to virtually collaborate on some short animations. One person will start out the animation, either in Photoshop or 3DsMax and they will upload it onto this padlet. Another person will then be able to dowload it and add some more of their own frames to the animation, once they are done they will then reupload it onto the padlet so another person can continue it. We will keep this cycle going until Dec. 1st. We will then have some students finalise the animation to be ready to show at the exhibition on Dec. 18th.

This was a virtual collaboration project done by an artists with Google and the Tate. They created a website and opened it up to anyone to begin creating animations and adding to others. Take a look through for inspiration.

2D animations created in photoshop should go under this area. Try and stick with the original style of the animation. If they are only using digital painting and simple shapes go with that theme; if they are bringing in images and creating more of a collage feel go with that. Make sure you are not changing the existing frames but simply adding more. Download the file from the last comment and add your frames, then resave the animation changing the title to the next number in the sequence Animation 3, Animation 4, etc. then add a comment and link to the file in your onedrive. Make sure you are logged in to your padlet account, annonymous posts will be deleted. If you would like to add a new starting animation send the link to my email.
