The Current Innovation of ION Bronchoscopoy

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Cited in Intuitive (2024), lung cancer has a 5 year survival rate of 23% for non-small cell lung cancer. This is low when compared to breast cancer (90%) and prostate cancer (98%). Early detection is key. More than 70% of all lung cancers are located in the outer one-third of the lung which are hard to reach. ION Bronchoscopy is a minimally invasive way for physicians to biopsy these hard to reach lung nodules. It allows the physician to navigate and travel through the lungs to a precise location using data downloaded from a CT scan or MRI. It pioneers the use of shape-sensing technology and real time data to guide the catheters to an exact location. This may allow a physician to diagnose lung cancer at an earlier stage and get patient answers sooner (Intuitive, 2024).

The ION robotic bronchoscopy is an amazing advancement in lung cancer treatment. Before ION, patients would have to have multiple invasive procedures to get a diagnosis. By the time they got their diagnosis, it was usually more advanced. The ION is easier on the patient, plus we can get a definitive diagnosis while doing the procedure.
