The Quote that stood out to me...

“I was engaged where it really really counts in terms of student’s success which is at home. So I think we have to be careful even about the term engagement because I think we have a tendency to think of engagement as you know, on the school council, or in the school, or involved with the school, and to me it’s really important that we remember what all of the research says pretty unequivocally, if were talking about how we can help kids be successful in school, and It’s what you do at home that’s the most important. So to me the question then becomes, how do we ensure that parents know more, and how do we communicate better with parents so that they understand you know, what makes a difference at home, what they can do at home, that they understand how easy it is to help their kids succeed at school” (Kidder, A., 2011).

I will admit I had the tendency to think of engagement as a parent who was involved with the school, in the classroom or on the school council. I think that Annie Kidder was extremely accurate when she says “…if we’re talking about how we can help our kids be successful in school, and it’s what you do at home that’s the most important”.

Not only do I work with students with intellectual disabilities, I also work with a lot of students whose families are not willing or able to help them at home. This can make things difficult, as I can only do so much during the day and then that ends when the bell rings. My school encourages parents to be involved in many ways and even offers different classes frequently. Our Speech pathologists have run multiple sessions offering techniques that can be used at home, and recently we had English classes for parents who speak different languages.

I think the biggest question for me, is how do I ensure parents know what makes a difference at home and how do I encourage them to do this if they are not willing or capable of this.

Teachers are constantly striving to help children succeed and reach their full potential. I think that we have to understand that for a child to reach their full potential then both the school and families/care givers need to work together. One of the ethical standards is trust, our relationships with parents, guardians and the students are based around this trust.

Teachers are dedicated in care and commitment to students. Our goal is to facilitate the development of students as contributing citizens. In order to achieve this, both teachers and parents must be a part of the process. Teachers participate and promote the creation of safe, collaborative supportive learning communities.
