I think that Annie Kidder was extremely accurate when she says “…if we’re talking about how we can help our kids be successful in school,  and it’s what you do at home that’s the most important”. 

Not only do I work with students with intellectual disabilities, I also work with a lot of students whose families are not willing or able to help them at home.  This can make things difficult, as I can only do so much during the day and then that ends when the bell rings.  My school encourages parents to be involved in many ways and even offers different classes frequently. Our Speech pathologists have run multiple sessions offering techniques that can be used at home, and recently we had English classes for parents who speak different languages.

Teachers are constantly striving to help children succeed and reach their full potential. I think that we have to understand that for a child to reach their full potential then both the school and families/care givers need to work together.
