The Bastille became a symbol of the oppression of tyranny the french citizens were facing. On July 12th 250 barrels of gunpowder were transferred to the Bastille for protection. Only two days later a mob of Parisians armed with all different kinds of weapons stormed the Bastille. The military governor of Bastille and his men eventually surrendered and were taken into custody. Gunpowder, cannons, and seven prisoners were freed from the Bastille. There was crisis in Europe people were starving and taxes were raising and the king wasn't doing anything about it. The third estate wasn't being included in the government so the national assembly was a way to assert power without the king. This government also represented the majority of the population since 96% of people were apart if the third estate yet weren't being represented. Him and Marie Antoinette were facing attacks and decided to flee to Vareness. They thought more people in the countryside were still loyal to the monarchy and would be better protected there. However they were unsuccessful and got caught on their way. This had a huge affect in the revolution while people already saw the king as unfit for his role this only further confirmed it. The monarchy was abolished and a new constitution was written. Maximilian Robespierre was head of this. He was the head of the Jacobins a radical group that took control over the government. He also oversaw the committee of public safety who hunted down suspected traitors to the revolution. During the Reign of terror 200,000 people were arrested and 40,000 killed. On January 21 he was quickly executed by guillotine. Marie Antoinette would face the same fate nine months later. This changed the revolution and led to the Reign of Terror. At 16 he became an artillery lieutenant and at 26 he was commander of the enter french army. The french government wasn't doing well and he decided to take control of the government in a coup d'etat. He did many good things for the french that are still important today. He created the Napoleonic code and and created laws like freedom of religion, abolition, of hereditary privilege, and equality to all men. He entered with 400,000 soldiers and came out with only 10,000. Napoleons final battle was in Waterloo and he was defeated. He was sent to a far island of St.Helena and died there in 1821. other countries saw that Napoleon was weak and the congress of Vienna took over. The congress of Vienna was a group of leaders from many nations met in 1814 and created a peace plan for Europe.
