Page 39, “So how come when I wasn’t looking, Jeffy got cancer?” This shows that Steven was asking himself why when he was making Jeffy breakfast, and he stopped looking for one second, Jeffy got hurt which led to them finding out he has cancer.
Page 40, “How did I not notice this? Why did I need a doctor to show me? How long has he been limping?” This means that the mom wants to know how long Jeffy has been limping, and how she didn’t notice it when she was too busy looking at something.
Page 44, “How do you think your brother feels right now?” This means that the mom is asking Steven how he thinks his brother feels, so she told him to put his own feelings away and think about how Jeffy would feel.
Page 58, “would that be so painful?” This shows that Steven was talking about how him and his dad don’t make eye contact since his dad doesn’t want Steven to see the pain in his eyes, but Steven thinks that his dad is trying not to talk to him.
Page 58, “Why hasn’t she checked in with me this week?” This means that Steven is asking himself why his mom hasn’t contacted him ever since they went to the other doctor. He feels like his mom isn’t even acting like a mom, so he’s asking himself what is going on.

Steven should’ve been afraid of what Jeffrey would say to him when he got home from the hospital but instead Steven is afraid of what he will say to Jeffrey. Page 68
Jeffrey never, ever used to sleep on car rides. This means that it’s weird for Jeffrey to sleep on car rides because he never did and now he is. Page 65
I thanked him, and really meant it, which wasnt always the casewhen I showed Jeffrey gratitude. This means that Steven is being more caring about Jeffrey because of his condition. Page 70
“How about a drum lesson?” This is odd because Steven would never let Jeffrey use him drum set. Page 74
“Then Jeffrey said he wanted to take a nap” this is odd because Jeffrey never takes naps. Page 74
“I’m normally not used to being hugged by my mother in broad daylight in my adolescent years, but I must say, it felt pretty nice right then.” This is weird for Steven to be like this because he doesn’t like to be hugged by his mother. This is showing how bad the situation is for Steven. Page 79

Pg 83 and 84, “Now, of course, I knew it had to be Annette...” This is out of the ordinary because Annette is acting very different from the regular Annette Steven knows, looking much prettier and different, and acting different, in this section.
On pg 86-89,”All of a sudden phone calls came in...” this section is weird because people don’t usually come up to their house and give them gifts and food and stuff, which I think has to do with Jeffry’s cancer
Pg 90,” I Tried to get him to play checkers,...” this section is weird because Jeffrey used to love playing with his brother, and for him to want to stop playing and go away is very weird for Jeffrey.

Page 92, “MOM!” This shows that Steven was very annoyed with his mom since she was giving him bad advice of what to wear to the dance and that he was getting embarrassed. It also shows that Steven doesn’t want his mom to pick out his outfit since he kept yelling her name to get her to stop.
Page 80, “If I don’t do this, Jeffrey will get better” this means that Steven really cared about Jeffrey’s condition and wanted him to get better, so he would sacrifice anything to God for Jeffrey to get better and that shows that the condition is really bad.
Page 90, “This was the kid” this shows that when Jeffrey got cancer, his emotions and actions changed a lot. He used to be a smiley and happy kid, and once he got diagnosed with cancer his personality changed to a very tired and sad kid, and that shows how being sick can change a person.

This chapter starts out by Steven going to his drum lesson. He goes to the drum lesson but tries to quit because his parents need the money. His drum teacher decided to start giving him free lessons instead. Then when he is at band practice, Annette walks into the band room with a broken arm. She can’t play the piano. Everyone is doing very good at practice.

This chapter When Jeffrey goes to school a new kid who doesn’t know that Jeffrey has cancer tells Jeffrey that he’s bald and that makes Jeffrey cry. That night Steven hears Jeffrey crying. He asks what’s wrong and Jeffrey said that the kid said he was bald. Later that night Steven shaves his head so he can be bald with Jeffrey and then he becomes more popular at school. All of the girls think he is so sweet.

In this chapter, Steven is at band practice and his teacher announces that everyone is required to do service work to finish the semester. Lots of people are upset about this because they are so busy that they might have to quit the band. Renee and Annette make a plan to make the spring concert a “benefit” concert. This means that instead of doing charity work, they use band as charity work. They decide to charge 15 dollars a seat for 1000 seats which will give them 15,000 dollars. They also want to put ads in the year book and have a bake sale in the lobby of the concert. They figure out that with all of the stuff they decide to do, they can make 20 something thousand dollars. They want to do this and give the money to Stevens family. When Steven pitches the idea to his parents at dinner they make Jeffrey leave the room. At the end of the chapter, Stevens mom goes into the bathroom and pukes. Jeffrey come back and asked who will take him to philly tomorrow if his mom is sick.

So the chapter starts with Steven waking up from the dream on the floor, with his cheek bleeding. After that, Steven, The Dad, and Jeffrey all went to the hospital. During the ride, Jeffrey noticed that he forgot Matt medic. Knowing he couldn’t do anything about it, The Dad kept driving to the hospital. When they arrived at the hospital, steven saw a girl, about his age, who was a patient at the hospital. When they walked to his room, a lot of nurses and doctors told him about Jeffrey, and one doctor asked if he wanted to go to the chapel, like his mother does. This surprised Steven to find out that his mother prayed for Jeffrey. After this, he went to the laundry room to play on his practice pad. After a couple of hours, he was suprised to find the girl standing in the doorway. After an akward conversation, they went to the kids lounge and talked.

Steven keeps thinking that the doctors made a “mistake” when thinking Jeffrey had leukemia. He kept telling that to himself to make it seem like Jeffrey was ok, but he knew it wasn’t just a nose bleed if he was in the er for so long.

Page 69
“My brother was so sick, so sick that they had to stick a needle in his bone.” Steven has just been told that Jeffrey was very sick and it wasn’t all ok.

Page 78
“Cancer patients find the experience very stressful and... stressful? Stressful? Why should this be stressful?” He was starting to notice that Jeffrey is actually seriously sick

Page 77-78
“What additional support?” Steven thinks it’s weird to give Jeffrey additional support in school every day. He thinks a group hug in his homeroom would be super weird.

Allie Forney 1/16/18

I think that this job was really easy to do, when you found repeating words you wrote them down and it was normally really easy to find them. I think I did pretty good on this job, so I would give myself 4.5/5, I think I found all of the signposts.

“And play the drums” it shows us that he needs to do something he loves because of what’s going on pg108
Mia Olson 1/23/18
Mia Olson 1/23/18
Steven keeps saying I’m fine to Annette over and over again. I think that he says this because he doesn’t want to tell Annette all of the things that are happening to Jeffrey. He doesn’t want anyone to know what’s going on in his personal life. Page 115
“Do we have to? Yup. Do we really have to? Uh-huh.” Steven really doesn’t want to go meet with the teachers. He doesn’t want the teachers to know about Jeffrey’s cancer so he doesn’t want to go to the teachers. Page 120

Why doesn’t Steven comfort his dad instead of sneaking away.

Pg 188 “I’m sorry”Steven doesn’t really want to leave his drum lessons, and he’s sorry for leaving his teacher.

Pg 196 “unfair” Steven is saying that the world is unfair, because Annette broke her arm, Jeffery has cancer, and on top of it all the new kid in Jeffrey class pointed it out to him that he was bald.

1/31/18

Pgs 213-215 “ uh-oh” The third uh-oh was his mom was sick, which means who’s going to take Jeffry to the hospital, with was the fourth uh-oh.
