CAFOs (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations) are Animal Feeding Operations (AFO's) that keep and raise animals in confinement, usually away from areas of land that don't grow vegetation, and in some cases, fresh water. The most important part of CAFOs is the "Concentrated" part. Animals are usually fed things like corn, soy, and other grains that aren't designed for the bodies to consume.

How does it affect our Environment?

The CWA, Clean Water Act, states that CAFOs (also could be called Factory Farms) are a source of pollution in our water, but the EPA, Environmental Protection Agency, making efforts to talk about the water pollution, is sort of shut down by livestock and poultry trade organizations, so not much advancement is made. The bodies of water near these "factory farms" can be polluted by animal waste, (which is very common since its usually passed through tubes and such,) or synthetic fertilizers and pesticides that are used in the soil to create the food for the livestock. Another way factory farms ruin our environment is by greenhouse gases that are emitted in the atmosphere, for example, huge amounts of Carbon Dioxide are released, methane from cows, and nitrous oxide. Another thing that factory farms and their produce play a part into is our health as consumers. Most of the time, the animals are overdosed with antibiotics, causing antibiotic-resisting bugs, or "superbugs" in the meat of the animal. Once we consume, the antibiotics can cause human vulnerability to infection.

What can we do to help?

One thing that for sure can happen is to have these "factory farms" be in a more open spaces, and let the animals be free, become "cage-free animals". Another thing would be to let the public know how bad these places are not only for the animals, but for our environment, for us. It sounds a littler selfish considering the fact that we kill these animals for our diet, but a little background knowledge could change the way we all live. Finally, the animals have no say in what happens to them, so we have to speak for them. Once we get our voices heard, help the animals live a better life, and be led into a better, more natural choice in produce, then we will be able to back down. It's all about resistance.
