Hip-hop pedagogy reflects content integration, knowledge construction, an equity pedagogy, and empowering school culture. It offers a "way of authentically and practically incorporating the creative elements of hip-hop into teaching, and inviting students to have a connection with the content while meeting them on their cultural turf by teaching to, and through, their realities and experiences” (Adjapong & Emdin, 2015, p. 67).

Hip-hip songs are popular in many languages, many students will be able to find connection through their home language. When I plan my lesson with the Hip-hop pedagogy in mind, I would want to incorporate songs in all of my students' language. I should also start by utilizing students' FoK. It is certain that students know more about current songs and styles they enjoy better than I do. Perhaps the whole section can be started by students.

I wish by incorporating hip hop into the lesson, students will not only be able to take ownership of content knowledge but also build confidence in their culture and interests.

Adjapong, E.

BE DIFFERENT, BE BRAVE, BE YOU
By Sonia Sotomayor and illustrated by Rafael López

Just Ask reflects prejudice reduction and empowering school culture dimensions of multicultural education. It explores diversity, disability, and learning differences in an approachable way for young students. Every character in this book is different in terms of their needs and abilities yet discuss openly and welcomes questions with a high level of self-confidence. It conveys that having different needs is a norm and encourages communication and connection.

In my bilingual classroom, I would like to read this book to students and have them create their own pages. Depending on my student demographics, I might read different sections of the book in different languages or have students read them in different languages. This book also has a Spanish version. Although there is no Mandarin translation, it's easy enough for me to translate some of it myself. I also wish to create a community that promotes sharing and asking about each other's needs by conducting a sharing and asking activity as a part of my morning meeting.
I wish that by reading this book and participating in these activities, students will not only feel safe and confident in self-discovery but also be aware of different needs and actively support each other.

by Cari Best, Vanessa Brantley-Newton (Illustrator)
Just Ask! reflects prejudice reduction and equity pedagogy. It tells the story of Zulay not letting her blindness stop her from running the field day race. What I really like is how the book also shares her feelings towards being pulled out, how she interacts with classmates, things she find easy, and things she find difficult.

I would introduce this book to students and ask them to find aspects in the book that Zulay is having difficulty with. I will then ask them how they would change it so it can be accessable. Students can use the things Zulay were good at to think about how they are different from the things she finds difficult. I would then ask them to try to do some task with their eyes closed and then discuss what difficulties they faces and what we can do to eliminate those obstacles.
In completeing these activities, students will develop compassion and empathy. They will also develop a more critical view of their enviornment and how to design a equitable classroom.

by Todd Parr
It's Okay to Be Different reflects prejudice reduction and empowering school culture dimensions of multicultural education. It uses simple words and colorful pictures to tell children that it's ok to be all kinds of different, from having two moms to eating macaronni in the bathtub.

In order for this book to enhance emotional development and promote diverity in a lower grade classroom, I think that the class need to often refer back to this book and using the phrase "it's ok to....". It's not enought for the teacher to just read this book, how everyone react to difference afterwards also needs to be supported.
I hope that by introducint this book to my younger students, they can build up self-confidence, support each other, and embrace diversity as the norm.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zrm4dC3Poe0

This is a Youtube channel that shares stories and conversations about disability and neurodiversity. It reflects the prejudice reduction dimension of multicultural education.

When introducing these videos to students, the teacher might need to pick and choose suitable videos and guide the thought process of students. It's easy for students to simply see the interviewees, say "weird", and ignore the content. By using guiding questions and pausing the video for self-reflection sessions, students will be more able to connect to the peoples in the videos. Teachers should slowly work their way to self-reflection to prevent students' self-defense mechanism. These videos can be preceded by other activities that reflect prejudice. The class can start from discussing the events and feels conveyed in the video and then critically analyze the environment or society, then lastly self-reflect on their own reactions and prejudice. When incorporated correctly, this channel offers many resources in terms of normalizing difference and empowering students with disabilities or mental illness.
I wish that videos like this will allow students to have a deeper understanding of different conditions and develop a critical view of their own reactions and believes. Students with similar conditions will be able to see the stories of others, some still facing difficulties, some that have overcome them.

by Minh Lê, illustrated by Dan Santat
Drawn Together tackles the prejudice reduction and empowering school culture dimensions of multicultural education. It is a wordless book showing how a Thai boy and his grandpa overcome cultural and language differences through drawings.
Because this is a wordless book, the content is accessible to students in all literacy levels. The act of co-creating a story through different art styles and cultures is an interesting concept that students can try with each other or with their family. Students can also think of different ways people can connect and communicate across language barriers. I would also ask students to conduct an interview on their family member's hobbies, interests, and stories.
I wish this book can kick start students' communication with older generations connect students with their roots. I also want students to gain awareness of the different methods of communication and expression.

by Juana Martinez-Neal
Alma and How She Got Her Name reflects the prejudice reduction and empowering school culture dimensions. Alma, whose full name is Alma Sofia Esperanza José Pura Candela, often feel strange about having so many names. She questions her father about this and he explains what each of her name honers. Through these stories of her name, she feels empowered and builds her own self-identity.

Being in a diverse classroom, many of my students will have names or sure names that originated from different languages. It is easy for kids to feel strange and insecure because their names sound different. Therefore, I will ask students to ask their family the origins and reasons behind their names. Then, rather than having them present to the whole class, I would ask each student to ask around 2~3 students about the story behind their names and create art about it. Whole class presentations sometimes feel distant to the audiences. Because all of us will be saying each other's names, I wish for each student to acknowledge the value behind them in a more personal way. By doing so, we can create a classroom the respects and values diversity.
