As of now, Animal Foundations are dehorning elephants and rhinos to prevent the poachers from killing them for the horn, and dying their tusks pink to lessen the value of the ivory. Unfortunately, dehornimg these animals is not working, because the poachers are continuing to kill the elephants and rhinos for any residual horn. We plan to put $5,000,000 dollars towards developing sanctuary’s across Africa to protect and preserve the elephants and rhino that are still alive. We also plan to destribute the rest of our money to adding to the dying of horns and tusks as well as drone surveillance that is already being done. We decided to countine to dye the tusk and horns rather then dehorning rhinos and elephant to allow the elephant and rhinos protection.

The Demand For Ivory

The reason poaching is continually a growing problem is because of its demand. Much like a giraffe tail these items are bought by the rich and thought to represent good luck and act as a superstition. There really is no intended purpose for the horn other than to be a delicacy. Elephant tusks are valued due to the ivory inside of them but the main point for these items is to display wealth. The actual use of Ivory is unethical and will eventually cause extinction for these species if action is not taken.

If elephants and Rhinos are dying at the rate that they are today Africa could potentially be losing billions of dollars. 20,000 African elephants were killed last year for their tusks, that's more than were born last year.
