In 1965, an American lawyer, Millard, first visited the Coinonia farm where Christians lived, and got the idea of a cooperative house, and completed the first neighborhood house in 1969.
Officially, it began in 1976 when Millard and his wife, Fuller, raised funds and built a house in San Antonio, Texas, to help beneficiaries pay back slowly and little by little without interest. 
Habitat builds houses for homeless people.
Since the Habitat movement aims to raise a family by improving the residential environment, the residents of Habitat houses also need the will and minimum ability to stand on their own feet.
1965년 미국의 한 변호사 밀러드가 기독교인이 모여 사는 코이노니아 농장에 처음 방문하여 협동 주택의 아이디어를 얻었고, 1969년 최초의 동역 주택을 완공하였다. 정식적으로는 1976년 밀러드와 그의 부인 퓰러 부부가 텍사스의 샌 안토니오에서 수혜자가 무이자로 천천히 조금씩 갚아나가도록 여러 사람이 자금을 모아 집을 지어주면서 시작되었다.
해비타트는 무주택자를 위해 집을 짓는다.
해비타트 운동은 주거환경의 개선을 통해 가정을 일으켜 세우는 데에 목적을 두고 있기 때문에 해비타트 주택의 입주대상자 역시 자립하고자 하는 의지와 최소한의 능력을 필요로 한다.
