         <description><![CDATA[<div>For over 60 years, the dominant religion in England was Protestantism, overseen by the Protestant Church of England. Protestantism replaced Catholicism and Catholics were penalized if they were caught practicing. In 1603, Queen Elizabeth passed and King James VI claimed the throne. Though he was more tolerant of Catholicism than previous rulers, Catholics remained dissatisfied with Protestant rulers.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Several days before, Lord Monteagle received a letter warning him of the event that was yet to come, "My lord, out of the love I bear to some of your friends, I have a care of your preservation, therefore I would advise you as you tender your life to devise some excuse to shift of your attendance at this parliament . . . for though there be no appearance of any stir, yet I say they shall receive a terrible blow."&nbsp;He sent the letter to the King's chief minister and from there, two searches were completed. The second was successful and the conspiracy was discovered.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Guy Fawkes</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Even though he was not the leader of the Gunpowder Plot, Guy Fawkes became the symbol of it. He adopted the name "John Johnson" and was guarding the door wearing a cloak, boots and spurs when he was caught. Fawkes did not reveal any information when he was first arrested but after being tortured, he confessed his and the others' participation in the conspiracy. </div>]]></description>
