         <description><![CDATA[<div>Instrument transformers are created to transform voltage or current from high values in the transmission and distribution systems to the low values that can be utilized by low voltage metering device. There are two type of instruments transformer which are current transformer and voltage transformer. <br>There are some application of instrument transformer in daily life which are:<br><strong>1. Regulating alternating current<br></strong>All transformers have one basic function: increasing or decreasing alternating current within the electrical system. By regulating the flow of current, the transformer allows for increased energy efficiency, which regulates and ultimately lowers electricity bills.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>2. Stopping and starting the flow of electricity<br></strong>Transformers are also useful in stopping the flow of electricity and interrupting an electric current. Transformers are commonly present in circuit breakers, where they utilize a switch to automatically interrupt the flow of electricity and to prevent damage that can occur as a result of high voltage.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>3. Battery charging<br></strong>The concept of battery charging is fuelled by the functioning of generators. Transformers are used to control the voltage that enters the battery during the charging process in order to prevent any damages that can occur to the internal battery components. This is important because an unregulated voltage can result in high surges during charging of batteries.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>4. Steel manufacturing<br></strong>Steel manufacturing plants rely on the functioning of high voltage transformers to provide a range of voltages for the manufacturing process. High currents are required during melting and welding of steel, and lower current are required during the cooling process. In order to provide this range of voltages, transformers are necessary for regulating currents within the system.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>5. Electrochemicals<br></strong>In chemical engineering and manufacturing processes, electrolysis is normally fuelled by the functioning of transformers. Metals such as copper, zinc, and aluminum are normally used for the purposes of electroplating. During the process, transformers provide a regulated electrical current that is used to drive the chemical reaction from the beginning stages until completion. The current can be therefore be regulated as the reaction proceeds.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div>]]></description>

The primary winding of the transformer is connected to the high voltage or high current circuit, and the meter or relay is connected to the secondary circuit.<br><br>Current transformers (CT) are a series connected type of instrument transformer. They are designed to present negligible load to the supply being measured and have an accurate current ratio and phase relationship to enable accurate secondary connected metering.<br><br>Current transformers are often constructed by passing a single primary turn (either an insulated cable or an uninsulated bus bar) through a well-insulated toroidal core wrapped with many turns of wire. This affords easy implementation on high voltage bushings of grid transformers and other devices by installing the secondary turn core inside high-voltage bushing insulators and using the pass-through conductor as a single turn primary.<br><br>Voltage transformers (VT), also called potential transformers (PT), are a parallel connected type of instrument transformer. They are designed to present negligible load to the supply being measured and have an accurate voltage ratio and phase relationship to enable accurate secondary connected metering<br><br>Application of Current Transformer:<br>A current clamp uses a current transformer with a split core that can be easily wrapped around a conductor in a circuit. This is a common method used in portable current measuring instruments but permanent installations use more economical types of current transformer. Specially constructed wideband CTs are also used, usually with an oscilloscope, to measure high frequency waveforms or pulsed currents within pulsed power systems.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Current transformer<br>&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;A current transformer is a type of instrument transformer that produce an alternating current in its secondary winding that in proportion to the current flowing through the primary winding as a result of a constant potential on the primary. A current transformer also isolates the measuring instruments from high voltage circuits. Generally,this current transformer has a primary winding, a core and a secondary winding. An alternating magnetic field in the core is produced by the alternating current in the primary, which then induces an alternating current in the secondary winding. The primary winding of the transformer is connected in series with the load and carries the actual current flowing to the load, while the secondary winding is connected to a measuring device or a relay. The number of secondary turns is proportional to the current flowing through the primary. For example the larger the magnitude of current flowing through the primary, more the number of secondary turns.          <description><![CDATA[<div>A Transformer is a device which transfers electric current from one circuit to another, usually by the principal of mutual induction. During this process, the frequency remains constant whereas the voltage can be increased or decreased according to the need.<br><br>This transfer of electricity occurs with the help of two coils. One of which is known as the Primary Coil, which is connected to a source of alternating current. The other is known as the Secondary Coil, and it is connected to an external circuit. <br>Transformer works on the Principle of Faraday’s Law of Mutual Induction. Transformer instrument are high accuracy class electrical devices used to isolate or transform voltage or current levels. The most common usage of instrument transformers is to operate instruments or metering from high voltage or high current circuits, safely isolating secondary control circuitry from the high voltages or currents. The primary winding of the transformer is connected to the high voltage or high current circuit, and the meter or relay is connected to the secondary circuit. Instrument transformers may also be used as an isolation transformer so that secondary quantities may be used in phase shifting without affecting other primary connected devices.

Types :
 
Potential Transformer
Potential transformers are extremely accurate and normally the type of these potential transformers is falls under step down transformer category.

All potential transformers are generally falls under the shell-type transformer and it’s not much different from the ordinary two winding transformers which discussed.

Secondary of potential transformers are normally completely instead to protect against the high voltage. Potential transformer is connect to line on way.

High voltage primary of potential transformer also should be grounded for additional protection for the operator of the potential transformer. 

 
Current Transformers 
Current transformers are mainly use to measure the huge alternative current in electrical equipments.

In Some high voltage lines where measuring equipments are difficult to connect, these type of current transformers are use with other ammeters to measure the current under alternative current circuits. 
 
To measure the current of high voltage line this current transformer step town the current level in to known ratio.

Normally the current transformer is connected to the line with series connection.

In current transformer the number of turns of coils in secondary is greater primary.

When the primary to secondary current ration of current transformer is 200: 10 then its steps up the voltage 20 times. Clip on type current transformers are the most use current transformers in electrical industry.

A Transformer is a device which transfers electric current from one circuit to another, usually by the principal of mutual induction. During this process, the frequency remains constant whereas the voltage can be increased or decreased according to the need.

This transfer of electricity occurs with the help of two coils. One of which is known as the Primary Coil, which is connected to a source of alternating current. The other is known as the Secondary Coil, and it is connected to an external circuit. 
Transformer works on the Principle of Faraday’s Law of Mutual Induction. This principle states that the rate of change of flux is directly proportional to the induced electromagnetic flux.


So in short, this mutual induction between the coils is responsible for transferring the electric energy.

It is used to increase or decrease the alternating voltages in electric power applications.

Instrument transformers are used to step-down current or voltage to measurable values. They provide standardized, useable levels of current or voltage in a variety of power monitoring and measurement applications.There are two basic types of instrument transformers:
 
Current transformers: are used to step-down current in a predictable fashion with regard to both current and phase. They are often used as inputs to current-powered instruments.
Voltage transformers: produce a secondary voltage that is substantially proportional to the primary voltage, but that differs in phase by an angle that is approximately zero for an appropriate direction of the connections. Often, voltage transformers are used as potential transformers or in combination with current transformers.

Application.
It step up the level of voltage at generation side before transmission and distribution.
in distribution side, for commercial or domestic use of electricity, transformer step down ( decries) the level of voltage for example form 11kV to 220 V single phase and 440 V three phase.
The Current Transformer and Potential Transformer also used power system and in the industry. Also, it is used for impedance matching.  So these were the simple uses and application of transformer.

It not only can extend the range of the low range instrument but also isolate them from high current and high voltage ac circuits. 

This makes their handling very safe.

There are two types of instrument transformer, Current and potential transformer:

Bar Type Current Transformers
A true bar type current transformer is a toroidal type transformer with a bus bar as an integral part of the current transformer which is permanently inserted through the window of the torroid. The bus bar serves as the primary conductor. The bar type is inserted in the circuit to be monitored. It is a common error to refer to a wound primary type as a bar type because the primary connections are made to bus bars. In the wound type the bus bars are a means of connection and are not a continuous bar.
Lastly, 
The primary purpose of this guide is to give the reader a basic understanding of how to apply instrument transformers in a practical way while observing good engineering practice. It is not intended to make the reader an instrument transformer designer. A special effort will be made to keep to a minimum technical terms and language.

 In power system, the currents and voltages are very large – Therefore, their direct measurements are not possible. • It might appear that the extension of range could be conveniently done by the use of shunts for currents and multiplier for voltage measurement, as in DC. – But this method is suitable only for small values of current and voltage. • Difficult to achieve accuracy with a shunt on AC • Capability of having shunt of large range is not possible • The power consumed by multipliers become large as the voltage increases • The measuring circuit is not isolated electrically from the power circuit • The solution is to step The solution is to step -down these currents/voltages with the down these currents/voltages with the help of Instrument Transformer – So that, they could be metered with instruments of moderate sizes.

Instrument transformers is a device used to reduce the current or voltage values into values can be handled by other equipment. It transforms the power system current and voltage to lower magnitude and provide an isolation between the power network and the relay and other instruments connected to the transformer secondary winding.  

There are some industries require specific industrial transformers due to the usage of power (current) as a major resource for production. Electric arc furnaces (EAF), ladle furnaces (LF) and high-current rectifiers need a specific design to supply the necessary power at a low voltage level.

Electrical instrument transformers transform high currents and voltages to standardized low and easily measurable values that are isolated from the high voltage. When used for metering purposes, instrument transformers provide voltage or current signals that are very accurate representations of the transmission line values in both magnitude and phase. 

Instrument transformers provide either a current or voltage at a usable level to monitor the voltage or current in a given circuit.There are types of transformer that is current transformer and voltage transformer.Current and voltage transformers are also used to provide the energy to operate various protective relays. The degree to which an instrument transformer produces a current or voltage that is proportionate to the one to be monitored is referred to as its accuracy. 

Current transformer are generally used to step down current in a very predictable fashion with respect to current and phase. Voltage transformer are use to reduce high-voltages down to a level that can be safely applied to voltmeters, or to the voltage-coils of wattmeters or energy meters, or to protective relays, while electrically-isolating those instruments from the high voltage supply. 

Application of instrument transformer:
1.  To assess the quality of electricity supply through the power networks.
2.   To safely determine the alternating current through a power conductor. 
3.  Make the ordinary low current instruments suitable for measurement of high current and isolate them from high voltage.

Current transformer
 
 A current transformer is a type of instrument transformer that produce an alternating current in its secondary winding that in proportion to the current flowing through the primary winding as a result of a constant potential on the primary. A current transformer also isolates the measuring instruments from high voltage circuits. Generally,this current transformer has a primary winding, a core and a secondary winding. An alternating magnetic field in the core is produced by the alternating current in the primary, which then induces an alternating current in the secondary winding. The primary winding of the transformer is connected in series with the load and carries the actual current flowing to the load, while the secondary winding is connected to a measuring device or a relay. The number of secondary turns is proportional to the current flowing through the primary. For example the larger the magnitude of current flowing through the primary, more the number of secondary turns. There are two type of current transformers; measuring current transformers and protective current transformers In industry, current transformers are used extensively for measuring current and monitoring the operation of the power grid.
 
 Voltage Transformer
 
 Voltage transformers (VT), also called potential transformers (PT), are a parallel connected type of instrument transformer are designed to present negligible load to the supply being measured and have an accurate voltage ratio and phase relationship to enable accurate secondary connected metering. There are three primary types of potential transformers (PT): electromagnetic, capacitor, and optical. The electromagnetic potential transformer is a wire-wound transformer. The capacitor voltage transformer (CVT) uses a capacitance potential divider and is used at higher voltages due to a lower cost than an electromagnetic PT. An optical voltage transformer exploits the Faraday effect, rotating polarized light, in optical materials.

Current transformers are often constructed by passing a single primary turn (either an insulated cable or an uninsulated bus bar) through a well-insulated toroidal core wrapped with many turns of wire. This affords easy implementation on high voltage bushings of grid transformers and other devices by installing the secondary turn core inside high-voltage bushing insulators and using the pass-through conductor as a single turn primary.

Application of Current Transformer:
A current clamp uses a current transformer with a split core that can be easily wrapped around a conductor in a circuit. This is a common method used in portable current measuring instruments but permanent installations use more economical types of current transformer. Specially constructed wideband CTs are also used, usually with an oscilloscope, to measure high frequency waveforms or pulsed currents within pulsed power systems. One type provides an IR voltage output that is proportional to the measured current; another, called a Rogowski coil, requires an external integrator in order to provide a proportional output.

Instrument transformers (ITs) are designed to transform voltage or current from the high values in the transmission and distribution systems to the low values that can be utilized by low voltage metering devices. 

Types of transformers:

1.       Current transformers-Connected on the MV network primary circuit, they supply a reduced current value to the secondary circuit, proportional to the network current on which they are installed. Current transformer is of two types-CT: current transformer; LPCT (Low Power Current Transformer): electronic current transformers.
2.       Voltage transformers-Voltage transformers are connected to the MV network primary, they supply the secondary circuit with a reduced voltage value, proportional to the network voltage on which they are installed.


There are three primary applications :

1. metering (for energy billing and transaction purposes)

2.protection control (for system protection and protective relaying purposes)

3.load survey (for economic management of industrial loads).

-Current Transformer is an instrument transformer in which the secondary current is substantially proportional to primary current and differs in phase from it by ideally zero degree.
Application :  Current transformer is used to measure alternating current (AC). It produces a current in its secondary which is proportional to the current in its primary. ... The instrument transformers isolate measurement or protection circuits from the high voltage of the primary system.
-Potential Transformer  is a voltage step-down transformer which reduces the voltage of a high voltage circuit to a lower level for the purpose of measurement. These are connected across or parallel to the line which is to be monitored. The basic principle of operation and construction of this transformer is similar to the standard power transformer.
Application :  It is used for protection called as protection voltage transformers. In some cases potential transformers are used for both metering and protection purposes, in such cases, one secondary winding is connected to metering and other secondary winding is used for protection.

A Transformer is a device which transfers electric current from one circuit to another, usually by the principal of mutual induction. During this process, the frequency remains constant whereas the voltage can be increased or decreased according to the need.

This transfer of electricity occurs with the help of two coils. One of which is known as the Primary Coil, which is connected to a source of alternating current. The other is known as the Secondary Coil, and it is connected to an external circuit. 
Transformer works on the Principle of Faraday’s Law of Mutual Induction. This principle states that the rate of change of flux is directly proportional to the induced electromagnetic flux.


So in short, this mutual induction between the coils is responsible for transferring the electric energy.

Instrument transformers provide either a current or voltage at a usable level to monitor the voltage or current in a given circuit.There are types of transformer that is current transformer and voltage transformer.Current and voltage transformers are also used to provide the energy to operate various protective relays. The degree to which an instrument transformer produces a current or voltage that is proportionate to the one to be monitored is referred to as its accuracy. 

Current transformer are generally used to step down current in a very predictable fashion with respect to current and phase. Voltage transformer are use to reduce high-voltages down to a level that can be safely applied to voltmeters, or to the voltage-coils of wattmeters or energy meters, or to protective relays, while electrically-isolating those instruments from the high voltage supply.

 A current transformer is a type of instrument transformer that produce an alternating current in its secondary winding that in proportion to the current flowing through the primary winding as a result of a constant potential on the primary. A current transformer also isolates the measuring instruments from high voltage circuits. Generally,this current transformer has a primary winding, a core and a secondary winding. An alternating magnetic field in the core is produced by the alternating current in the primary, which then induces an alternating current in the secondary winding. The primary winding of the transformer is connected in series with the load and carries the actual current flowing to the load, while the secondary winding is connected to a measuring device or a relay. The number of secondary turns is proportional to the current flowing through the primary. For example the larger the magnitude of current flowing through the primary, more the number of secondary turns. There are two type of current transformers; measuring current transformers and protective current transformers In industry, current transformers are used extensively for measuring current and monitoring the operation of the power grid.

Transformer works on the Principle of Faraday’s Law of Mutual Induction. This principle states that the rate of change of flux is directly proportional to the induced electromagnetic flux.


So in short, this mutual induction between the coils is responsible for transferring the electric energy.

The transformer used for isolate two circuits electrically.
It is used to increase or decrease the alternating voltages in electric power applications.
The transformer used in voltmeter, ammeters, protective relay etc.

Instrument transformers are used to step-down current or voltage to measurable values. They provide standardized, useable levels of current or voltage in a variety of power monitoring and measurement applications.There are two basic types of instrument transformers:
 
Current transformers: are used to step-down current in a predictable fashion with regard to both current and phase. They are often used as inputs to current-powered instruments.
Voltage transformers: produce a secondary voltage that is substantially proportional to the primary voltage, but that differs in phase by an angle that is approximately zero for an appropriate direction of the connections. Often, voltage transformers are used as potential transformers or in combination with current transformers.

Application.
It step up the level of voltage at generation side before transmission and distribution.
in distribution side, for commercial or domestic use of electricity, transformer step down ( decries) the level of voltage for example form 11kV to 220 V single phase and 440 V three phase.
The Current Transformer and Potential Transformer also used power system and in the industry. Also, it is used for impedance matching.  So these were the simple uses and application of transformer.

Bar Type Current Transformers
A true bar type current transformer is a toroidal type transformer with a bus bar as an integral part of the current transformer which is permanently inserted through the window of the torroid. The bus bar serves as the primary conductor. The bar type is inserted in the circuit to be monitored. It is a common error to refer to a wound primary type as a bar type because the primary connections are made to bus bars. In the wound type the bus bars are a means of connection and are not a continuous bar.
Lastly, 
The primary purpose of this guide is to give the reader a basic understanding of how to apply instrument transformers in a practical way while observing good engineering practice. Instrument transformers is a device used to reduce the current or voltage values into values can be handled by other equipment. It transforms the power system current and voltage to lower magnitude and provide an isolation between the power network and the relay and other instruments connected to the transformer secondary winding.  

There are some industries require specific industrial transformers due to the usage of power (current) as a major resource for production. Electric arc furnaces (EAF), ladle furnaces (LF) and high-current rectifiers need a specific design to supply the necessary power at a low voltage level.

When used for metering purposes, instrument transformers provide voltage or current signals that are very accurate representations of the transmission line values in both magnitude and phase. 

Instrument transformers provide either a current or voltage at a usable level to monitor the voltage or current in a given circuit.There are types of transformer that is current transformer and voltage transformer.Current and voltage transformers are also used to provide the energy to operate various protective relays. The degree to which an instrument transformer produces a current or voltage that is proportionate to the one to be monitored is referred to as its accuracy. 

Current transformer are generally used to step down current in a very predictable fashion with respect to current and phase. Voltage transformer are use to reduce high-voltages down to a level that can be safely applied to voltmeters, or to the voltage-coils of wattmeters or energy meters, or to protective relays, while electrically-isolating those instruments from the high voltage supply. 

Application of instrument transformer:
1.  To assess the quality of electricity supply through the power networks.
2.   To safely determine the alternating current through a power conductor. 
3.  Make the ordinary low current instruments suitable for measurement of high current and isolate them from high voltage.

Current transformer
 
 A current transformer is a type of instrument transformer that produce an alternating current in its secondary winding that in proportion to the current flowing through the primary winding as a result of a constant potential on the primary. A current transformer also isolates the measuring instruments from high voltage circuits. Generally,this current transformer has a primary winding, a core and a secondary winding. An alternating magnetic field in the core is produced by the alternating current in the primary, which then induces an alternating current in the secondary winding. The primary winding of the transformer is connected in series with the load and carries the actual current flowing to the load, while the secondary winding is connected to a measuring device or a relay. The number of secondary turns is proportional to the current flowing through the primary. For example the larger the magnitude of current flowing through the primary, more the number of secondary turns. There are two type of current transformers; measuring current transformers and protective current transformers In industry, current transformers are used extensively for measuring current and monitoring the operation of the power grid.
 
 Voltage Transformer
 
 Voltage transformers (VT), also called potential transformers (PT), are a parallel connected type of instrument transformer are designed to present negligible load to the supply being measured and have an accurate voltage ratio and phase relationship to enable accurate secondary connected metering. There are three primary types of potential transformers (PT): electromagnetic, capacitor, and optical. The electromagnetic potential transformer is a wire-wound transformer. The capacitor voltage transformer (CVT) uses a capacitance potential divider and is used at higher voltages due to a lower cost than an electromagnetic PT. An optical voltage transformer exploits the Faraday effect, rotating polarized light, in optical materials.

Current transformers are often constructed by passing a single primary turn (either an insulated cable or an uninsulated bus bar) through a well-insulated toroidal core wrapped with many turns of wire. This affords easy implementation on high voltage bushings of grid transformers and other devices by installing the secondary turn core inside high-voltage bushing insulators and using the pass-through conductor as a single turn primary.

Application of Current Transformer:
A current clamp uses a current transformer with a split core that can be easily wrapped around a conductor in a circuit. This is a common method used in portable current measuring instruments but permanent installations use more economical types of current transformer. Specially constructed wideband CTs are also used, usually with an oscilloscope, to measure high frequency waveforms or pulsed currents within pulsed power systems. One type provides an IR voltage output that is proportional to the measured current; another, called a Rogowski coil, requires an external integrator in order to provide a proportional output.

Instrument transformers are created to transform voltage or current from high values in the transmission and distribution systems to the low values that can be utilized by low voltage metering device. There are two type of instruments transformer which are current transformer and voltage transformer. 
There are some application of instrument transformer in daily life which are:
1. Regulating alternating current
All transformers have one basic function: increasing or decreasing alternating current within the electrical system. By regulating the flow of current, the transformer allows for increased energy efficiency, which regulates and ultimately lowers electricity bills.

2. Stopping and starting the flow of electricity
Transformers are also useful in stopping the flow of electricity and interrupting an electric current. Transformers are commonly present in circuit breakers, where they utilize a switch to automatically interrupt the flow of electricity and to prevent damage that can occur as a result of high voltage.

3. Battery charging
The concept of battery charging is fuelled by the functioning of generators. Transformers are used to control the voltage that enters the battery during the charging process in order to prevent any damages that can occur to the internal battery components. This is important because an unregulated voltage can result in high surges during charging of batteries.

4. Steel manufacturing
Steel manufacturing plants rely on the functioning of high voltage transformers to provide a range of voltages for the manufacturing process. High currents are required during melting and welding of steel, and lower current are required during the cooling process. In order to provide this range of voltages, transformers are necessary for regulating currents within the system.

5. Electrochemicals
In chemical engineering and manufacturing processes, electrolysis is normally fuelled by the functioning of transformers. Metals such as copper, zinc, and aluminum are normally used for the purposes of electroplating. During the process, transformers provide a regulated electrical current that is used to drive the chemical reaction from the beginning stages until completion. The current can be therefore be regulated as the reaction proceeds.

In many terminals the quality of electric energy is significantly deteriorated and this result in the occurrence of the conducted disturbances in the primary signal of the instrument transformer which cause deterioration of its metrological characteristics. The main indicators to determine the level of periodic waveforms distortion are RMS and average values, total harmonic distortion (THD), crest and shape factors. Laboratory tests consisted of determining these parameters in the system with and without instrument transformers for pre-defined and repeatable distorted waveforms of instrument transformers primary windings supply voltage. The tests were performed for voltage (1000V / 100V) and current (5A / 5A) transformers. On the basis of comparison between values of designated parameters used in estimation of the power quality, obtained for measurements of the same distorted waveforms, in measuring circuits with and without instrument transformers additional errors caused by their operation is determine. It was found that higher harmonic from disturbance signal in the primary circuits of both voltage and current transformers causes increase of errors during the transfer of the signal basic harmonic (50 Hz). Furthermore, in the case of disturbance signals which frequencies are higher than 50 Hz the decrease in transfer ratio and increase of the higher harmonic phase displacement after transfer by the instrument transformer is noticeable. It must therefore be concluded that during the transfer of distorted signals through the instrument transformers their errors are increased in relation to the value defined for sinusoidal signals which frequency is 50 Hz.
