Lexia is a tool/app that has research proven ability to drive developing literacy skills for students of all levels. It does so by having students read to learn as opposed to learning to read.

It follows a 3-part method.

Teacher-Led Instruction

Independent, Student-Driven Learning

Ongoing Data to Monitor Progress

Student-Driven Learning occurs when they complete fun mini games, matching the correct phonemes, graphemes and then finally words to the sounds, they engage the students to read to learn.

The Ongoing Data to Monitor Progress occurs as students progress, they level up, which gives the students a real-time sense of success as they move along.

The Teacher-Led Instruction occurs from mining the Data collected to determine what areas of specific needs individual students or groups of students have, and then creating specific instructional lessons to address those needs.

The results of their sessions are logged and sent to the teacher providing them with detailed diagnostic assessments showing where the students need targeted attention.

Lexia is designed to be used by students for 20 minutes a day. The students' time logs are recorded and sent to the teacher, as are the results of each session. This video shows how this is done.

This is beneficial to the teacher as it provides the results immediately. This allows the teacher to adjust their plans/lessons/reading groups/centres in order to meet students' needs. Using the diagnostic assessments it provided to specifically target what UFLI lessons and activities specific to student needs. This is how it was used at the Summer Learning program provided by SCDSB over the summer.

The students will benefit from this because it ensures that what they are learning is personalized, and reflects their level.

Limitations of Lexia and How to Remedy Them

There are a few limitations of the tool/app:

The first one is the cost. It is very expensive. Some school boards pay for Lexia already as it does have proven results. I witnessed the results during the Summer Learning program I worked in for SCDSB. The classes I worked with were focused on reading. Student engagement was up and improvements were seen, but we were informed that this is a very expensive tool. Lexia costs $175 for the first student, and $110 per student after that. As such, I have seen students with IEPs in SCDSB who use it. The remedy for the cost could be to ask for more government funding, and raising money through parent counsel.

The second limitation is the start up time. When using this with students who are ranging from grade 1-5, getting students logged into their chromebooks and then the website can take up a lot of time. During the Summer Learning program I worked at this past summer, it would take me between 10-20 minutes to get 12 students up and running at a time. By the end of the fourth week the time was closer to 10 minutes, as some students were able to log in by themselves. So, a remedy to the situation is that once the students get the hang of logging in on their own, the process can run more smoothly and fit into a 20 minute centre/activity.
