I feel as though providing the animal is provided with the appropriate care their 5 animal needs are met and surpassed, and that what they are "used" for mimics that of their innate behaviour/ their "intended use" aka what they were bred for so that they enjoy the life they lead as they are being successfully enriched then generally it is ok . However i feel it is difficult to give a yes or know answer as it is not that black and white as i feel the opinions would vary dependant on species and the human purpose. The focus should however always be on the animal and their welfare in this role. M.G

Statement : Keeping animals in society.

I think that using animals for human purposes is acceptable for things such as food and companionship, as the animals are usually small and already domesticated meaning they would have little chance of survival in the wild, and in perspective to a wild Zoo animal are significantly smaller. Horses are larger animals however would usually graze in similar areas anyway, So keeping captive would not be inhumane especially if they have access to all of the things that they will need for a healthy and content lifestyle. However keeping a zoo animal would be inhumane as they need a lot more specified care and conditions to survive, additionally they are not bred for captivity and human interaction most common pets that are kept as Zoo animals are kept are Carnivorous species.
Keeping Cattle is also justified if the condition are suitable for example space, diet, behaviour exhibit (enrichment), in contrast to this Chickens are sometimes kept in unjustifiable conditions such as battery farms. This is inhumane and wrong.
I think that a pet animal should be an animal that can be kept with minimal disruption to there everyday life or that these disruptions can be supplemented by enrichment.

I feel as though there are many factors that play into this, it is a pre decided factor until we are able to develop our own opinions however it doesn't change the general rule of everyone else. Religion, location, individual beliefs and moral compass are all things that can change your opinion from the opinion of another. Personally for the most part i see no difference to the animals we currently keep to those we eat in the sense of if i could i would prefer to keep those that we eat as pets also as i see them as equal just as "cute", they are also intelligent if not more in some cases. I do still however consume these animals that are sacrificed for food despite this view i am conscious of this but i am also aware that even if i was to stop this will still continue and will not change, i try to eat less and hope that the meat of which i buy are from animals that have been treated well and been killed as painlessly as possible. although the sad truth is this unlikely in a lot of cases but is vastly out of my control as is the choice of what is killed and what is not. Ideally as an 'animal lover' i want nothing to be killed but is this really completely sustainable with where we currently stand. Again there are many arguments which make this such a vast argument with no black and white answer. M.G

As long as we are treating animals in a ”humane” way, however that statement in itself is very broad and a very grey area. For example, buying in hundreds of duck eggs and “game” to raise and kill for sport could be argued by some people that they are raised in a humane way and looked after up until the end, just as cows and chickens are raised. The difference being cows would not do well without being looked after by humans – where would they go? There are no animals that would feed on them. However, duck and game raised for sport/food can live in the wild without any human interference. Keeping animals as pets- the animal should have their 5 needs met. A lot of knowledge should go into owning different animals and understanding their needs such as animals that need to be kept in groups, or exotics that require specialist diets and climates. I don’t personally believe dogs should be owned if they are left alone all day- they are companion animals that need attention, they cannot let themselves out or do as they please like cats. Nor do I believe that birds should be kept in cages.

I think what people perceive as food or companion animals is based on what ancestors have done before us, and how much past generations have domesticated certain animals over others
