<title>In the First Part Last, by Angela Johnson shows multiple sides of the character, Mary, Bobby’s mom to show how she are like regular people and to show that stereotypes aren’t always true. Bobby’s mom doesn’t want to help Bobby which makes you stereotype her as mean and cruel until she surprises you. For example, Johnson writes, “ I won’t talk about how, I woke up one night to my mom rocking Feather and telling her to mind me and take care of me.” (Johnson 130). This shows that at the beginning when Bobby’s mom refuses to help Bobby, a brand new father with Feather, the baby, she is refused as mean and disapproving towards Feather when it was Bobby’s doing. But when she is shown asking Feather to look after Bobby, the reader realizes that Bobby’s mom just wanted the best for Bobby and Feather. She wanted him to be prepared when the worst happens and his mother isn’t there to help, she wanted him to understand the responsibility of being a father. Angela Johnson shows multiple sides to all her characters, like Bobby and his mom, Mary, to show she have different sides to her like every regular person and she can make a big conflict in the book, all of a sudden.</title>

<title>In the book, First Part Last by Angela Johnson, has characters like K-boy, J.L., Feather, Bobby’s dad and mom, etc. that are minor characters that shape the character and also help evolve a theme and a plot. Bobby’s mom is a person who changes a lot in the book, because at first she refuses to help with feather and it seemed she was denying a relationship with granddaughter. Johnson writes, “Now she’s three days and nine hours old, won’t sleep during the night and my mom-- her grandmother--only smiles at her when I’m not looking. But it’s all okay cause I know now better than I ever did that I’m supposed to do this. I’m supposed to be her daddy and stay up all night , I have to.” (Johnson 126). This shows that after all his mom was just trying to make sure that Bobby can be the best possible father, that he could be. Furthermore, the main reason Bobby&#39;s mom shows Bobby tough love is because she just wants him to be responsible and know how to take care of a feather in the event that no one else is around. Therefore, a minor character like Bobby’s mom play a big role by helping the main character, Bobby change for the best depending on the situation, like in the First Part Last or for the worst.</title>

<title>In the book, First Part Last by Angela Johnson characters like Bobby are stereotyped, therefore the reasoning for the author including stereotypes in the book is to show that a character can show off different details about themselves, then expected. Bobby is a naive, innocent teenager, that makes a big mistake, that many people judge him for. Johnson writes, “ I feel really old when I&#39;m holding her on subway and some lady tells me what a good brother I am and how I&#39;m so good with her. I feel stooped over then. You’d think I feel young.”(Johnson 81). This shows that the lady on the subway assumes that Bobby is the brother rather than the father and in a way judges him, because she believes that if he was the father that would be odd. Overall in the First Part Last, Angela Johnson portrays other characters as villains in a way to show that they judge and stereotype Bobby for mistakes he made in the past like accidentally being a father.</title>

<title>A symbol in a book, like the baby, Feather, in the book, First Part Last by Angela Johnson that is something meaningful to the reader and makes/ shows a difference in the character’s life. In the First Part Last when Bobby, gets pregnant with his girlfriend Nia, it&#39;s a shock and a big milestone, that effects years of his life. Johnson says” No I don&#39;t know anything about raising a kid. I’m 16 and none of those people on the wall look like the kind of family me and Feather’s going to be. But I&#39;m doing it.”(Johnson 124). This shows that Feather symbolizes that Bobby&#39;s innocence is gone and now he can&#39;t be a kid she has larger/ more important responsibilities to be a good father, friend, son, etc. As Feather in the book, First Part Last, Other symbols create a feeling that touches the reader and shows the importance of it in the main character’s life.</title>

<title>In the book First Part Last, Angela Johnson uses the craft technique of figurative language, to develop the theme of no one can control everything.one day Nia begins to see you very sick and he&#39;s all alone, when her mind wanders and she falls into a coma. Johnson writes,” But by the time I was 10 I wanted to be a balloonist, and just fly up over everybody and that&#39;s what it feels like I&#39;m doing now. I&#39;m flying up high over everybody; waiver the city and even myself. I&#39;m flying over Bobby and my parents and the park with all my friends in it. I guess this is what it must feel like to be dying.”( Johnson 114-115). This shows that Nia comparing her death to flying over all she loves, develops the theme of no one can control everything. Overall craft techniques like figurative language help develop the theme by comparing two things that are apart of the same.</title>
