 and assessments with those in mind. Rather than just having a discussion board to say you have one, pick projects and assignments that increase presence while still accomplishing your goal. I'm shocked at how many faculty don't do this!

I love to incorporate game style learning activities which I make optional so that learners who want to have mastery type training can but those who don't like that type of activity can choose another route to test their own knowledge levels. It is much more likely that I will read more comments in this manner than trying to follow a stream of 100 discussion board posts. I use discussion boards, but personally find them to be busywork. Padlet is really easy to use as well.
