Rome was an Ideal place to live. It had a water source, coming from the Tiber River which was also their access to the Mediterranean sea, although it didn't have the drawbacks of living on the coast, like Pirates. Almost all travelers had to cross into Rome because it was located near a narrow spot in the river. That would allow the economy to grow because many people would build shops for the travelers. This made it a very desirable position for a city, which was why it was a desired place to put a city. The government was able to regulate the people passing through, so they could gain money by taxing people to cross the river.

The city was built on 7 of the foothills of the Apennine mountains. Because the hills were very steep, It was hard to attack the city. The mountains also provided run-off water from the snow, but since they had the river, they didnt needThe government was also able to spend less money on defense because the hill was a natural defense.

The Mediterranean Sea allowed the Romans access to the rest of the word. From the city, the Romans could sail down the Tiber and into the ocean where they could do many things. One of those would be trading. The sea enabled them to trade because they could take a ( relatively ) short journey to get things that they needed from other towns. They also could fish, even though Rome was located on the river. Finally, they could launch a sea invasion on an other country, or the opposite, in forming an alliance with them. The Government was able to get many things that could benefit their people through trade, or become allies with a powerful nation for protection.

The Italian Peninsula acted as a giant roadblock for attackers. What i mean bu this is if you were trying to sail from Greece to Rome to colonize it, you would have to sail all the way around the peninsula. When you sail all the way around the peninsula, you could run out of materials such as food and water because of the long distance you would need to travel. Also the peninsula had very fertile land, so the Roman government and the Roman people didn't need to worry about food.
