In Panama, there are two types of production. The first is commercial aquaculture, which is carried out by the private sector. This sector's output is based on the farming of penaeid shrimp. The second type of production is semi-commercial, which employs pisciculture and is aimed at populations with limited or no resources.

This sector is supported by the government through the National Aquaculture Directorate (DINAAC) of the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA)

Through the breeding of fish fed with natural resources, we can provide cheap but high-quality protein to subsistence farmers and their families. And, as a result, reduce the national demand for red meat through economic production across the national territory using fresh, brackish, and saline water environments, as well as lentic and lotic water environments. As a consequence, Panama's luxury market will be supplied with high-quality edible aquatic products produced through aquaculture practices.
