Young people that are homeless are very likely to be exposed to issues such as difficulty getting jobs, violence, and abuse. The majority of youth became homeless due to family conflict and only around 6% became homeless by choice. Why isn't action being taken on this?

Everyone deserves an education. This example clearly shows that an injustice is taking place and that action needs to be taken because many of these young people have become homeless because they were left with no choice. We notice homeless people on the streets, but why don't we take proper action to help them? The Government of Canada does invest $119 million dollars towards the situation every year, however, it hasn't been enough to see a big change in homelessness in general. Youth have so many things in life that are yet to be experienced and therefore, proper action must be taken to provide them with proper housing and education. 

How can we solve this? Having a proper and effective system that provides financial help for those who are chronically homeless and a system that directly helps them to find affordable places to stay will definitely help to stop not only youth homelessness but homelessness in general. Setting up a website or having those who are homeless do a survey on their situation can help in providing more services for those who need it the most.

The fact that so many young people have lost their education and are homeless while I am safe at home, creating assignments for school, makes me feel extremely guilty. I am no different than the homeless youth, we are equal, and they deserve a better life. When the emergency services were called, they didn't receive any help whatsoever. This was due to their unpaid bills. Because of this, 2 children had lost their lives in the house fire. 

According to research, in 2013, there was a contract agreement that provides information on the costs for attending fires. However, Meadow Lake Tribal Chief Richard Ben did not remember signing any contract and said that they didn't even have a contract in the first place. 

This example clearly shows that an injustice has been taken place and that action needs to be taken because these innocent children have now lost their lives due to the decision made by emergency services. Even if the family did not pay for the services, it is the responsibility of firefighters to protect the lives of those who are in danger. It is really difficult to comprehend how the emergency services decided not to help them and instead decided to watch the family suffer and lose their children in the event.

The children definitely could have been saved but we decided not to save them. It was very inappropriate of the emergency service centre to ask whether the resident has paid their taxes or not when they are in danger and are asking for help. Canada has been one of the safest and most peaceful countries in the world for many years and if we want to remain this way, action must be taken to ensure everyone is treated fairly and equally. 

How can this be solved? If someone is in danger and calling for help, the right thing to do is to go and rescue them and make sure they're safe. The bills for the service can be taken care of once we can ensure that the individual and their family are safe. According to research, First Nation Canadian women are 6x more likely to be killed by their partner than those that aren't Indigenous. Only 4 out of 10 incidents of violence and abuse against Aboriginal people are reported. The statistics show that Indigenous women are significantly more affected by violence than those who are non-Indigenous, and these numbers are only the incidents that are being reported to the police. But, why? This is because Indigenous women that are part of marginalized groups may encounter barriers to resources, preventing them from getting help. 

This shows that injustice has taken place and that action needs to be taken. We are all equal. No one should be treated this way and in order to encourage people to use their voices, we need to show them that we are on their side and that their voices are definitely heard. First Nations in Canada are facing many economical and social problems. Some of these include poverty, discrimination, trauma, violence exposure, and many more.

This clearly shows that injustice has taken place and that action must be taken because many First Nations are still struggling with these issues. We are all human, and it is our responsibility to ensure that we take action and bring awareness to this situation. 

How can we solve this? We can solve this by continuing to spread awareness on this issue. This way, history will not be forgotten and we can all work together to provide First Nations with the rights they deserve. Another thing we can do to solve indifference is to donate. According to research, There has been a 60% increase in hospitalizations among youth for mental disorders. Suicide is the second most common cause of death among those between 15-34 in Canada. Not only this but only 1 out of 5 kids receive proper services regarding mental health. 

Many parents don't take the mental health of their kids as seriously as they should be. For example, many kids are pressured by their parents to enter fields they aren't interested in and are pressured to become someone they don't want to be. When children form mental health issues, some parents try to explain that they are being pressured for their own good. 

Parents always want the best for their children, which is why some parents pressure their children to do things that they aren't interested in, especially when it comes to careers. Youth are forced into careers that they aren't interested in especially because of the amount of money and respect they will earn in that field. This is only one example of what can cause mental health issues. 

This shows that indifference has taken place and that action needs to be taken because mental health is something that is talked about often but also is something that many people don't care about or don't take as seriously as they should. Many teenagers struggle to cope with mental health. We can solve this by having teachers take a few minutes of their day each week to discuss mental health and how to look after it with their class. 

Many people tend to hide mental health issues, believing that they will go away on their own. They aren't aware that by doing this, it can get worse. This war was between the Sinhalese and the Sri Lankan Tamils. During the civil war in Sri Lanka, more than 20,000 Sri Lankan Tamils had gone missing. Hundreds of families attended rallies in order to find out where their loved ones are. They had hope that their loved ones were still alive but unfortunately, they were announced dead. 

This definitely shows that indifference has taken place and that action must be taken. Many innocent people were separated from their families during the war, killed, and many Tamils in Sri Lanka are still being discriminated against to this day.

My parents had come to Canada because of this war. I am very grateful to be living in such an amazing country and to be provided with the safety and security that I wouldn't have received if I was born in Sri Lanka. Many Tamils have moved to different areas of the world due to this war and I think that bringing more awareness to this issue will help the Tamils in Sri Lanka receive equal rights. 

I chose the Tamil genocide as an example of indifference because this genocide is extremely similar to the Indigenous genocide that occurred in Canada. Between the years 1980-2012, more than 1200 Indigenous women were missing or were killed. These women did not do anything wrong and did not deserve to be killed. This event relates very well with indifference because it shows that indifference has affected my life and therefore, I think this story should be shared. 

It was in 2017, at a police station near where I live. My parents had divorced and I hadn't seen my mom in months during this time due to her behaviour. She was physically abusive towards me and my sister, which made us too scared to go visit her. My mom had wanted to see us one evening and we had gone to the police station to see her and tell her that we were not willing to come. 

The meeting did not go so well and we ended up having to get the police involved. A police officer came up to us to discuss the issue and the police officer had told me that I had no choice but to go with my mom. They said that if I don't go with my mom for the weekend, they would then arrest my dad. My dad did not complain and had waited in the car. 

I had refused to go with my mom as I was afraid of what she would do to me if I had gone with her. The police officer ended up forcing me off of the chair and my mom began dragging me and my sister out the door. I was screaming and crying while the police were laughing and having a conversation with each other, completely ignoring me. I felt extremely disrespected and my sister and I ended up going to our mom's house and staying for the weekend. Everyone makes mistakes and my mom is not abusive towards us anymore so we go visit her once in a while. 

I think that this story shows that injustice has taken place because the police did not consider my side of the story, nor did they do anything to calm me down. They only focused on getting their job done, which was to make sure that my sister and I visit our mom for the weekend. 

One thing that I regret is not speaking up. I did not enjoy the police officer touching me without my permission. It made me feel extremely uncomfortable but because he was a police officer, I was too afraid to say anything. Crying was not going to solve the issue and now that I am older, I also realize that it was wrong of the police officers to threaten to arrest my dad if I did not go with my mom, as they did not have a valid reason to arrest my dad. This event made me realize how much power you can give someone when you don't speak up.

I decided to share this event because it shows that fear is the main reason people are too afraid to use their voices. Because of this event, I am now able to understand why people are hesitant to speak up. I think that if someone had encouraged me to use my voice, I would have been able to stick up for myself. 

My experience wasn't a huge issue, however, this issue relates to many bigger issues in the world that can be solved faster if we are encouraged to use our voices and speak up. 

How can we encourage people to use their voices? Learning to speak up should be taught in school when children are young. This way, individuals will be well educated on the benefits of speaking up and will speak up for themselves and for others once they grow up. The world will become a much better place.
