When scientists were theorizing the big bang theory in the 1990's, it occurred to them that there isn't enough matter in the universe to simply just stop expanding, and either go back and shrink, or just stop. So they were trying to find an answer. Eventually, they found dark matter, and something just as crazy as dark matter which they named dark energy.

So, will the universe just expand forever? Well it later occurred to scientists that there may actually be more out there than just space and regular matter. We now know that the universe could be 68% dark energy, 27% dark matter, and the rest is normal matter.

What is dark matter? Well, we know what makes up the universe, right? matter? Actually, scientists have found out that this may not be true. In fact, if this dark matter theory is true, there could be more dark matter than regular matter.

Some scientists realized that space isn't just nothing. For example, Albert Einstein realized that space has amazing properties like expanding. Also, Einstein's gravity theory states that empty space can posses it's own energy, and because this energy is a property of space, this energy wouldn't be diminished as space expands. Basically, it means that if EInstein is right, space pretty much has limitless energy as long as it keeps expanding.

In conclusion, although dark matter is very intriguing because of the many possibilities in contains, unfortunately, we really don't know much about it at all. Hopefully in the future we can find out more about this mysterious, theoretical material.

We know dark energy and dark matter exist because, although we cannot see it on an electromagnetic spectrum, we do know that it has mass, which forms gravity. So, although we cannot see dark matter, we still know it's out there because it has mass, which means it has gravity.

Know that we know what dark matter is, and how we know it exists, we can ask a new question - What does it do?
Well, Scientists have found this information out by looking at what dark matter does to objects that we can see. First, many scientists believe dark matter is the answer to why stars move within galaxies. We also believe dark matter explains the unexplained mass in some clusters of galaxies.
